Basic Computer Networks
A computer network is a group of computers and other devices connected together
to share resources and information. Networks can be classified by their size,
geographical distribution, or topology.
Types of Networks:
- Local Area Network (LAN): A network confined to a small geographic area, such
as a home or office.
- Wide Area Network (WAN): A network that spans a large geographic area, like
the internet.
- Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN): A LAN that uses wireless technology to
connect devices.
Key Concepts:
- IP Address: A unique identifier assigned to each device on a network.
- Router: A device that forwards data packets between networks.
- Protocols: Rules and conventions for communication between network devices.
Common protocols include HTTP (for web browsing), TCP/IP (for general
communication), and FTP (for file transfer).
Example:
- A router directs data packets from your computer to the internet, allowing
you to access websites, send emails, and connect to other services.
