Microprocessor-controlled devices?

‐ Microprocessor-controlled devices are electronic

devices in which a microprocessor or a
microcontroller chip is embedded to control its
operation or working.
‐ They are also known as smart devices.
Smart Homes

Effects of Microprocessor-controlled devices

Positive and negative effects on our:

‐ Life style
‐ Leisure time
‐ Physical fitness
‐ Data security
‐ Social interaction
Categories of Microprocessor-controlled devices

1. Labour-saving devices
2. Other devices
Labour-saving Devices

- Automatic washing machine

- Microwave oven
- Cookers
- Automatic dish washer
- Robotic vacuum cleaner
- Bread maker
- Smart fridge and freezers
Other Devices

- Digital alarm clocks

- TV sets
- Central heating and air-conditioning systems
- Home entertainment systems

Effects of
Microprocessor-controlled Devices
On
life style, leisure time, and physical fitness
Positive Effects
on life style, leisure time, and physical fitness:
 No manual tasks/house chores
 Saves time for leisure activities:
‐ Hobbies, shopping and socializing.
 No need to stay home while food is cooking or
clothes are being washed.
 Smart devices can be controlled through a web
enabled phones.
 Automatic burglar alarm give a sense of security
 Smart fridges and freezers can automatically order
fresh food from supermarkets.
Positive Effects

 Microprocessor-controlled devices save energy.

 Microprocessor-controlled devices can be easily
programmed to work automatically rather than to
turn knobs and press buttons
Negative Effects

 Lack of physical activity causes obesity and other

fitness issues
 Labour-saving devices tend to make people lazy.
 People lose household skills.
 Smart devices can be controlled through a web
enabled phones.
 Smart devices can lead to cyber security.
Negative Effects

 lead to more wasteful society:

- It usually not cost effective to repair circuit
boards so they are thrown away.
 Not easy to use for technophobes or those who
are not confident around electronic devices.
 Leaving devices on standby (such as TV or satellite
receivers) is wasteful of electricity.
Cyber/Data Security Issues
 hacker can communicate with our devices
remotely.
 household devices can be hacked to gain our
personal data.
 these devices are often set with default or no
password so can be hacked by cybercriminals.
 A hacker can find holiday dates by hacking into
smart devices and that makes the home easy for
break ins.
 A hacker can get key data by hacking smart
devices like freezer or fridge.

Positive and Negative Effects

Potential Health Problems

Learning Objectives

 To learn negative effects of using ICT on health

 To learn causes of negative effects on health
 To learn prevention techniques to mitigate potential
negative effects on health of using ICT
Success Criteria

To identify potential health problems and planning

preventive measures in real life.
Backbone and Neck Strain/pain

Reason/cause: Bad/poor sitting posture to use

computer for a long period stores stress
in the backbone.
1. Backbone Strain/Pain
Prevention Techniques

1. Use adjustable chair 2. 5-10 minutes break every hour

3. Use tiltable screens 4. Sit in correct sitting posture

1. Backbone Strain/pain
Prevention Techniques

5. Do light body stretching exercises

6. Do daily physical fitness exercises

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

The damage to fingers and wrist joints caused by

prolonged use of keyboard or repetitive clicking of
mouse buttons.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Prevention Techniques

1. Do hand and wrist stretching exercises

2. 5-10 minutes regular break every hour

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Prevention Techniques

3. Ensure correct posture of arm to the keyboard

4. Ensure correct posture of arm to the mouse

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Prevention Techniques

5. Use ergonomic mouse and keyboard

6. Users prone to RSI use voice-activated software

Eye Strain, Headache and Poor Eyesight

Continuously staring at computer screen accumulates

stress in eyes’ and brain muscles which ultimately
weakens eyesight and causes headache.
Eye Strain and poor eyesight

Common reasons

1. Continuous staring at computer screen

2. Glaring computer screen(reflection)
3. Low/very high lighting of computer screen
4. Bad display/poor resolution of computer screen
5. Over radiation
6. Blinking or waving of computer screen
Eye Strain and poor eyesight - Prevention

1. Look away from screen and look at distant objects

2. Take regular breaks
3. Stretch your eyes to reduce stress.
4. Use anti-glare screen
5. Use anti-glare glasses
6. Set appropriate lighting of computer screen
7. Set appropriate resolution of computer screen
Eye Strain and poor eyesight - Prevention

8. Prefer to use LEDs instead of CRT

9. Fix the loose fixtures to fix blinking screen.
10.Have regular medical check up of eyes
Irritation in lungs and eyes - Reasons

 laser printer produce ozone which

causes suffocation and other breathing
issues.

 laser printer produce organic dust

which causes irritation in eyes and
lungs.
Irritation in lungs and eyes - Prevention

1. Manage proper ventilation to

lower the ozone level and house
laser printers in designed
printer room.

2. Manage proper ventilation to

lower the ozone level and house
laser printers in designed
printer room.
Obesity

Using computer and having no physical fitness exercise

Effects
1. Hypertension
2. Type 2 diabetes
3. Heart disease
4. Osteoarthritis
5. Hyperlipidemia
6. Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obesity - Prevention

1. Physical fitness exercises 2. Avoid junk food

3. Eat more vegetables and fruits
