CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
FOREIGN STUDIES
According to Chigona, et.al. (2008), in research paper Use & Gratifications of
mobile internet among South African students have written, Most of the gratifications
identified can be clustered around the themes of contribution to identity-formation,
maintenance of peer group networks, and emancipation from local setting ,
maintenance of romantic relationships, escape from parental surveillance, co-
ordination of group activities, organization and management of social life, as a
primary contact medium, bonding device for friends and family, personal security,
constant availability and keeping in touch with geographically-distant relations”. A
few studies have interestingly compared the use of mobile phone among teenagers
to smoking “Adolescents ‘quest for an individual identity and for peer bonding
functions which used to be fulfilled by habits such as smoking, are now taken over
and supplied by the use of mobile phone “, written by N. A. Selian (2024) in the
mobile phone because attention is focused on chatting, music and others while their
academic activities are neglected and left to suffer.
According to Haruna Rabiu, et. al. (2016), which was published in The
European Scientific Journal (Vol. 12, No. 1) includes the information related to a
secondary student to know the penetration of Mobile Phone in their lives. The finding
of this study, revealed that Mobile Phone usage significantly influence academic
performance among male and female senior secondary school student. The author
emphasized that the students, parents and the teachers should be sensitized on the
influence of Mobile Phone usage on the academic performance of students.
LOCA STUDIES
According to (Sanchez, 2006) and mobile phone have become an essential
part of daily life and are very popular among the people almost every age group. It
has virtually affected the society’s accessibility, security, safety, coordination of
business, social Activities and had become a part of culture of the whole world.
According to (Elder, (2013) show that student who use Mobile Phone in
classes have score lower than students who did not use Mobile Phone and they
can’t even recall much information from the lecture Linda Sdarps (2011),” People
use mobile phone not only to communicate but also pretend to use cellphone to
avoid other people or in any situation that require them to start around avidly in front
of other people.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Using Android Phone in the classroom is quite controversial with many school
banning them and not allowing learners to use them for learning activities. Some
students experience Android Phone work in the classroom, where the teacher has
discussed the use of and created boundaries around the use of the Android Phone
values, role in society should be the basis of what and how teachers teaching.
However some of them feel that using Android Phone can be wonderful learning
tools and some are not. Student may have realized that using Android Phone are
distracting to themselves and may or not have a true understanding the Android
Phone can be distracting to other students around them (Sana, Weston, & Cepada
2013). Some parent believed that Android Phone is not for school, they believed that
student are not yet know the effect of Android Phone during class, that Android
Phone can be distraction for their studies. Some teachers are agreed that Android
Phone is better to use while learning for the student because they believe that
Android Phone can help them understand more the lesson that they are discussing.
The use of smartphones, particularly Android phones, has become ubiquitous
among students of all ages, including those in secondary education. As these
devices have become an integral part of daily life, it is crucial to understand their
impact on the study habits and academic performance of students.
This study aims to investigate the impact of using Android phones on the
study habits of Grade 11 HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) students at
Philippine Malaya College Inc. during the school year 2023-2024.Here is a
theoretical framework conclusion for the impact of using Android phones on the
study habits of Grade 11 HUMSS students at Philippine Malaya College Inc. for the
school year 2023-2024:
The concepts of distraction and multitasking are also crucial in this theoretical
framework. The ubiquity of smartphones and the constant availability of various
applications and notifications can lead to increased levels of distraction, which may
hinder students' ability to focus, retain information, and effectively manage their
study time.
Therefore, the theoretical framework incorporates the importance of self-
regulation and time management in the context of student learning. Effective study
habits are closely linked to an individual's capacity to self-regulate their behavior and
allocate their time appropriately for academic tasks. The use of Android phones may
impact these crucial skills, potentially affecting students' academic performance and
overall learning outcomes.
