Problem Statement
Can Aspen HYSYS handle modeling of solids? Which are the solid components in the library? How can someone add a solid
component?
Solution
HYSYS can model solid handling to limited extent. Aspen HYSYS is basically a VLE (Vapor liquid equilibrium) simulator and
doesn't account for solid-liquid-vapor equilibrium. Their vapor pressure information is by defaults set to zero. The existence of
solid components is only reflected in the energy and material balance calculations.
View the available solid components
Aspen HYSYS has limited number of solid components in its library which can be found by using the "Solids" filter.
Users may also add a solid component as a hypothetical solid
To add component to the component list, a hypo solid component can be created.
To add a hypothetical component, do the following:
1. Select the component type as 'Hypothetical Solid'.
2. Click on New Solid
3. Provide a name for the solid.
4. The minimum information that is required is a molecular weight and a density. The remaining properties may be estimated by
clicking the Estimate Unknown Props button. Of course, the more information introduced, the better.
5. Double click on the name 'New Solid' and click on 'Edit Properties' to edit more properties.
Handling solids
There are limited number of unit operations for solids handling, including cyclones, hydro cyclones and filters. To have more
information on solid operations, Please refer to Aspen HYSYS help menu.
