Elements of a computer System
Types of Computer
Uses of the Computer
Information System is a
combination of human
resource and computers
that interpret information.
Computer System is a
system that allows user
to key in inputs, process
the data and produce
outputs.
5 Elements in a Computer System
1. User
2. Hardware
3. Software
4. Data
5. Procedure
1. User
– the live-ware and most
important element of a computer
system
Example
Students who use computers.
2. Hardware
-refers to the physical
mechanism of a computer
system Input devices and output
devices.
Some Examples
Power supply, keyboard and
scanner
3. Software
-refers to sets of logical
functions and procedures that
enable a computer to perform a
specific task. Software can be
classified into three major
classes: system software,
programming software, and
application software.
4. Data
- refers to any information fed
into a computer.
Some Examples
Documents saved in your
personal computer and photos
downloaded
5. Procedures
- is a list of step-by-step
instructions and policies to
regulate the use of computer
system so that any desired
output can be achieved.
Types of Computer
1.Desktop Computers
-are the most common computers
found at home or workplaces
2. Laptops, Notebooks, and Netbooks
- featuring the same functions as
the desktop computers, these portable
versions are now preferred since they
are more convenient and handy.
3. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
-also termed “handheld” because
it fits the palm of the user
4. Mobile Devices
- solely used for
communication purposes
only but now it is multimedia
tool as well.
5. Servers
- are computer programs
that manage access to a
central resource. It is
typically the largest and the
most powerful computer in
a network that can supply
data to different workstations.
6. Mainframes and Supercomputers
-are the most sophisticated,
the most advanced and the most
expensive computers.
7. Gaming Consoles
- are computers that serve
a very unique primary need- to allow
users to play games developed
specifically for that console/platform
8. Internet Enabled Television
- Television, a home
entertainment device can
now be used to stream
videos from YouTube, stream
high definition movies from
Netflix and even update
status on social networking
media.
9. Embedded Computers
- have pre-defined tasks to perform
-their specific functions allow user to
rely on their consistency
-Automatic Teller Machines, calculators
and cameras are some items with
embedded computers
Uses of the Computer
1. Home Use
- Multimedia Center
- Gaming
- Home Research
- Communication Tool
- Home Budget
2. Academic Use
- Learning Tool
- Research Tool
- Distant Learning
- Other tools
3. Office Use
-Virtual Meeting Tool
- Productivity Tool
- Communications Tool
-Decision Support Tool
-Industrial Uses
-Enterprise Applications
4. Mobile Connectivity
- Navigation Applications
- Over-the-Air Internet
Hardware
Components of a Personal Computer
Components of a Personal Computer
1. Input Devices
2. Output Devices
3. System Devices
4. Storage Devices
5. Network Devices
1. Input Devices
-This pertains to any
peripheral that allows the user to
input data into the computer.
Some Examples
-Mouse -Web Camera -Joystick
-Keyboard - Scanner - Touchpad
2. Output Devices
-are peripherals that receive
data from computer.
Some Examples
- Speakers - Flat Screen Monitor
-Headsets -CRT Monitors
-Printer
3. System Unit Devices
-house all the electronic parts of the
Central Processing Unit (CPU).
4. Storage Devices
- pertains to hardware components
capable of saving information momentarily or
permanently.
Types of storage devices:
Magnetic
-data storage uses a magnetized medium
in reading and storing data
Hard Disk Drives
- massive storage device that
permanently stora
Portable Storage Devices
-are compact and light digital storage
devices
Optical Storage Devices
- refers to any storage methods that
stores limited amount of data on an optically
readable medium like the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM,
DVD-RAM, Blu-ray, etc.
Solid State Drives
- are non-volatile types of memory
5. Network Devices
-refers to the equipment that enables a
computer or a set of computers to share data
within the network and, in some caes, with
the Internet.
Ethernet Cards – network adapter allows the
users to set up a computer network
Wi-Fi Cards/Chips – network devices allow
personal computers or laptops to connect
within the range wireless access point.
Routers – networking devices that are used to
make bigger networks
Modem – is an electronic device capable of
sending, receiving and translating information
from the Internet through standard telephone
wire or to a directly connected computer
Network Hubs – is a hardware or device that
allows multiple connections to be connected
to a computer since it has multiple ports.
Switches – allow multiple connections
Bridges – connect different networks so they
can communicate
