Reasoning PYPs Coding-Decoding (2018-2023)

2022
Instruction for Q.1 to Q.3
Given below are the codes for the digits/symbols. Study the conditions given below and
answer the questions accordingly:
digit/ 5 9 % 2 # & 0 @ 8 * 1 ! $ 3 4 ? 7
symbol

Code F C O G S B T E A L H M P J V Q D

Conditions:
i) If the right most element in the group is an odd digit and the left most element is an even
digit, then reverse the order of the code for the group.
ii) If the right most element is a symbol and the left most is an even digit, then the codes of
these two get interchanged.
iii) If both the right most and the left most elements are symbols, then the code for both will
be Z.
iv) If the right most element in the group is an even digit and the left most element is an odd
digit, then the codes for the first two elements get interchanged between them and the
codes for the last two elements get interchanged between them.
v) If the right most element is an odd digit and the left most element is a symbol, then the
code for both will be Y.

Instruction for Q.4

Study the below given information and answer the questions that follow:
In a certain code language,
‘board neck spiritual truck’ is written as ‘ga po ni fu’
‘spiritual bloom if preach’ is written as ‘dx ga bd pk’
‘truck for neck preach’ is written as ‘ni sr fu dx’
‘board bloom if bird’ is written as ‘bd po pk ke’

Q.4) What is the code for ‘bloom’ as per the given code language?
[a] dx
[b] ga
[c] either ‘bd’ or ‘pk’
[d] either ‘ni’ or ‘po’
[e] po
Answer - (c)
Explanation -
ga – spiritual
dx – preach
po – board
sr – for
ke – bird
truck & neck (fu or ni)
bloom & if (bd or pk)

2020-21
Instruction for Q.1 to Q.2
Study the following information carefully and answer the questions that follow.
The following words are coded in this manner:
‘festival for women only’ is coded as ‘(p) 12D% 21H@ 4E@’
‘cindrella (q) to rescue’ is coded as ‘7B% 24I% 8G@ 9F%’
‘bugs ate all carrots’ is coded as ‘25D% (r) 24G% 26c@’
‘fight game play card’ is coded as ‘20D% (s) (t) 11D%’

Q.1) Which of the following will replace the blank ‘(p)’?

[a] 21C%
[b] 21C@
[c] 6C@
[d] 6C%
[e] 9C@
Answer - (b)
Explanation -
A single term is made up of three elements – one number, one letter and one symbol.
Number: Place value of reverse order of first letter. Example, in the word ‘festival’, the first
letter is ‘f’ whose place value is 6. Now reverse would be 21.
Letter: place value of number of letters in a word. Example, in the word ‘festival’, there are
8 letters and the 8 is the place value H.
Symbol: if the place value of last letter is even, then symbol ‘@’ is used and when place
value of last letter is odd, then symbol ‘%’ is used. Example, in the word ‘festival’, the last
letter is ‘L’ whose place value is 12 which is an even number.

Q.2) Which of the following word will replace the blank ‘q’?
[a] Doing
[b] Shoutes
[c] Shouted
[d] Fight
[e] Women
Answer - (c)
Explanation -
Use the same logic as above to arrive at the answer.

Q.1) If ‘BOMBAY’ is written as ‘MYMYMY’, then how will ‘TAMILNADU’ be written in that
code?
[a] TIATIATIA
[b] MNUMNUMNU
[c] IATIATIAT
[d] ALDALDALD
[e] MNMNMNMNM
Answer - (b)
Explanation -
The letters at the third and sixth place are repeated thrice to code BOMBAY as MYMYMY.
Similarly, the letters at the third, sixth and ninth places are repeated thrice to code
TAMILNADU as MNUMNUMNU.

Q.2) If ‘PEN’ and ‘MONKEY’ are coded as ‘GEE’ and ‘DFEBEG’ then ‘MAGGY’ will be coded
as:
[a] DAYYY
[b] DYYYG
[c] DAYYG
[d] DAGGG
[e] DAGGY
Answer - (d)
Explanation -
Let A, B, C….Z be represented by the number 1, 2, 3......26 respectively. Then
P (16) E (5) N(14) = G (7) E(5) E (5)
M (13) O (15) N (14) K (11) E (5) Y (25) = D (4) F (6) E (5) B(2) E(5) G (7)
Hence, M (13) A (1) G (7) G (7) Y (25) = D (4) A (1) G(7) G (7) G (7)
As single digit numbers do not change while for double-digit numbers, the digits are added.
Hence (d).
Q.3) ‘I am smart’ is coded as ‘spjm okz pkj’ and ‘I know everything’ is coded as ‘sat zyk
okz’.Which of the following could be the code of ‘smart girls know everything’?
[a] pkj spjm gre ykz
[b] sat zyk spjm pkj
[c] sat gre cat pkj
[d] pkj cat zyk sat
[e] pkj spjm gre sat
Answer - (d)
Explanation -
Code for ‘I’ is ‘OKZ”. Code for ‘KNOW’ and ‘EVERYTHING’ are either of ‘SAT’ and ‘ZYK’. Hence
in the code for the given sentence ‘SMART GIRLS KNOW EVERYTHING’ both the codes ‘SAT’
and ‘ZYK’ and only one from ‘SPJM’ and ‘PKJ’ should be used.

Q.4) In a certain language, HUNIKA is coded as 93223 and TARITA is coded as 212127. What
will be the code of NIVEDITA in this language?
[a] 1529318
[b] 2915429
[c] 1429319
[d] 1415429
[e] 1529319
Answer – (e)
Explanation – As per the position of alphabets in the English language, H=8, U=21, N=14, I=9,
K=11, A=1
Now for the next step, just add the first and the last number, then the second and the
second last number and so on till we get the middle number. So for HUNIKA we have:
HUNIKA = 8+1, 21+11, 14+9 = 93223
Similarly,
T=20, A=1, R=18, I =9, T=20, A=1
Therefore, the codes for TARITA becomes TARITA= 20+1, 1+20, 18+9 =212127
Finally, the code for NIVEDITA becomes, N=14, I= 9, V=22, E=5, D=4, I=9, T=20, A=1
NIVEDITA = 14+1, 9+20, 22+9, 5+4 = 1529319
