E. Discussion/ Analysis
Now, before we proceed to checking whether you have
answered the questions correctly, let us first identify
why these questions are important in understanding the
story.
In analyzing literary texts such as short stories like The
Gift of Magi, we deal with the basic elements of
literature. The questions that you have answered in our
previous activity actually pertain to a specific element.
The first question, “Who are the people involved in the
story” refers to the Characters. Kindly read the
definition of Characters, Gian. : Characters are people (or animals) that populate a story.
They can be major or minor, good or bad, round, or flat.
Thank you, Gian.
In-depth analysis of characters includes determining the
characteristics of each person involved in the story. Are
they good or bad? Are they the protagonist or
antagonist?
Let’s take a look at your answers. Who are the : Jim and Della, ma’am.
characters in the story?
Correct! And what are the characteristics of the : They are both good individuals ma’am.
characters, Jane?
Precisely.
(The teacher will check the answers of the groups and
give corresponding points)
The next element which answers the question when and
where the story takes place is the Setting. Please read : Setting refers to when and where the story occurs. It can be
the definition, Claire. real or imaginary, specific or general. In some cases, the
setting is just as important as the other elements because it
can help create a certain mood or atmosphere.
3
April 5, 2024
Thank you, Claire. : The setting is on Christmastime at Jim and Della’s home,
ma’am.
Now, in the story that we read, what is the setting, Ken?
: It is real ma’am because it uses natural setting, and it
That’s correct! Is the setting imaginary or real, specific specifically state that it was Christmastime ma’am.
or general, Alyssa?
: It’s joyous or hopeful season ma’am.
Very good! And what mood or atmosphere does that
give off, Charlene?
Excellent.
(The teacher will check the answers of the groups and
give corresponding points)
: Plot is the sequence of events in the story, and it can be
The third element is the Plot. Kindly read the definition, divided into three parts: the beginning, the middle, and the
Kyle. end. The beginning sets up the conflict and introduces the
main characters. The middle is where the conflict is
resolved, and the ending is where everything is tied up.
Thank you, Kyle.
So, the plot holds the structure of the story. You may
remember from your previous lessons the different : The elements of a short story are exposition, rising action,
elements of a short story which builds up the plot. Can climax, falling action, and denouement, ma’am.
you identify these, Gabriel?
Very good! We use those elements when we do in-depth
analysis. We have to determine each part of the story.
But, since the question only asks us what the story is all
about, it could be a summary of the story written in a
sentence or two.
(The teacher will check the answers of the groups and
give corresponding points)
The last element of literature that we’re going to discuss
today which answers the last question, “What is the : The theme of a story is its central idea or message. It is
overall idea of the story?” is the Theme. Kindly read the what the story is ultimately about. Sometimes the theme is
definition, Alex. stated directly, while other times, it is implied.
Thank you, Alex.
The theme of the story helps readers understand what
the author is trying to say, and it allows readers to
connect with the characters and events on a deeper
level.
Themes can be stated in one word for universal themes
such as love, family, friendship, poverty, or it could also
be stated in sentence form. Like “Happiness doesn’t
come in a form of material things” or “One cannot put : The theme in The Gift of the Magi is unconditional love
value into someone’s worth” ma’am.
In our selection, what is the underlying theme, Joshua? : Because both of the characters are ready to sacrifice their
prized possessions for the happiness of the other person,
ma’am.
Why do you say so?
Very well said!
(The teacher will check the answers of the groups and
give corresponding points) : Yes, ma’am.
Do you understand now the different elements of
literature, class? : Task # 3:
Instructions: Think of a previous selection or story discussed
