1. GENERAL
This calculation is for the design of the storm drainage system.
Collection, transport and discharge of storm water run-off from the proposed terminal as per the
development plans and general topography of the area, and discharge it to an adequate receiving
body without causing adverse on or off-site impacts.
The storm runoff generated from the Container Terminal Port – Phase 1 area would have a positive
drainage system to be directly disposed into the open sea through locations submitted to the
Employer for approval.

3. RAW DATA FOR CALCULATION OF STORM-WATER
3.1 Rainfall Criteria
Rainfall intensity of 46.40mm/hr for 1 in 50 year storm is to be adopted for rainfall duration of 1 hr
for the ports.
Clearance time of 4 hours is to be considered, subject to Port Authority requirements. Storm
drainage system to be designed for above criteria
The following design parameters are adopted for the network design:
Storm return period 1 in 50 year
Storm duration 60 minutes
Rainfall Intensity 46.4 mm/hr
3.2 Velocity Requirement
It is recommended that all storm water gravity drainage pipes to be designed to have a
self-cleansing velocity of not less than 0.60 m/s at full-bore free discharge and a maximum velocity
of 3 m/s. If the maximum velocity exceeds this limit, there should be drop manholes.
The network is sloped to have the design flow velocities in the range specified above. Pipe
gradients to ensure the minimum flow velocities are adopted so as to prevent solid sedimentation in
the pipelines. Maximum velocities are set to minimize the negative effects of abrasion on the pipes
and manholes.
3.3 Runoff Coefficients
The following values are commonly used during design in the Middle East:

Asphalt 0.70 - 0.95
Brick 0.70 - 0.85
Concrete 0.80 - 0.95
3.4 Formula for Run-off:
Q = 1/360*CIA Royal Commission Standard, Chapter 3 (3.10/B)
Q = Run-off from a given area in cubic meter
per second, m3/sec
C = Coefficient representing the ration of
run-off to rainfall (Asphalt Pavement=
0.95; Concrete Pavement=0.8)
I = Intensity of rainfall, mm/hr

A = Drainage Area in hectares
3.5 Formula for Velocity:
V = 1/n*R2/3*S1/2 Royal Commission Standard, Chapter 5 (5.05/E)
V = Velocity of flow (m/sec)
S = Hydraulic gradient
R = Hydraulic radius (m)
n = Roughness coefficient (0.013, table-3D, m/sec)
3.6 Pipe Materials
In compliance with Department of Study & Design, Municipality of Eastern Region, following pipe
materials have been proposed.
uPVC material ≤ 500mm
FRP material > 500 mm

4. STORM WATER DRAINAGE CALCULATION
A conventional positive drainage system is proposed within the project area with final disposal to
the sea. The proposed drainage system mainly consists of drainage pipelines, which would collect
the storm runoff through the proposed catch basin, channel gratings/strip drains placed as per local
standards and guidelines. No inflows from the adjacent developments are to be considered.
