River Engineering and Sediment Transport project (20%)

Directions: Please make a group of maximum five students who will commit themselves to the
work assignment. The sample site is shown on Google earth image in the following page. It is
possible to conduct field work on the same river with multiple groups. However, it is prohibited
to sample on the same spot.

Write the reports step wise clearly and reasonable.


Use your creative knowledge and assumptions where ever necessary.
Submission Deadline : May 27,2024.

1. Please find river flow inside ASTU campus. Suppose you are assigned as a River Engineer
hired by Adama Science and Technology (ASTU) infrastructure for river training or safety
purposes. Please visit the site and conduct the following assignment based on below listed
term of reference (TOR). During reconnaissance survey, please take dimension
measurements to support your findings.
A. Briefly characterize the river flow reach. ( 5 points )
B. Collect sediment sampling and conduct sieve analysis. Determine different sediment
sizes, D16, D50, D84, D90? ( 5 points )
C. Is the river bed mobile or stable river? Describe with facts and logical reasoning (),
support with pictures/photos. 2points
D. Estimate sediment load (bed load) in ton/year? ( 4 points)
E. Is river training work is possible along the reach? If yes write the procedures (4 points )
