Server correctly and avoid damage to the Fiery Color Server or other property, always pay attention to
CAUTION icons and messages.

How the Fiery Color Server operates

When a customer prints, the motherboard and printer interface board process image data. The printer interface
board is a custom board and allows the Fiery Color Server to communicate with the printer. The CPU controls the
transfer of image data to and from the motherboard and runs the PostScript interpreter. DIMM holds image data
during printing.
The interpreter rasterizes the page description file and compresses the image pattern into memory using
compression technology. The interpreter outputs the compressed raster data through the image frame buffer
memory to the printer interface board. The raster data is sent to the printer, which then renders the image on paper
at maximum speed.

Before servicing the Fiery Color Server

Before you service the Fiery Color Server, it is strongly recommended that you have the required tools (see Tools
required on page 10) and carefully review all precautions (see Precautions on page 11).
Also, keep in mind that the most common cause of a hardware problem is a faulty or loose connection. Before you
replace an expensive component, check internal and external connections.
If PF-707m is attached to the ColorPress 4080/4070/84hc/74hc and ColorPro 4065/4065P, you must install the
bracket to the Fiery Color Server. For more information, see the installation manual that comes with the printer.

Tools required

To install or service the Fiery Color Server, you will need the following tools and parts:

• ESD wrist grounding strap and antistatic mat.

• Flathead screwdriver.
• #0, #1, and #2 Phillips head screwdrivers.
• Needle-nose pliers.

CMOS jumper

Do not move or change any of the default jumper configurations.

J60 is the Clear CMOS and Password jumper. Default configuration: jumper cap installed on
J60 pins 1 and 2.

Note: Because the jumper cap is very small, it is not necessary—and could introduce an error—
to remove the jumper cap in order to clear the CMOS settings. Instead, clear the CMOS by
denying power to the motherboard, as described.

Pin 1

Removing the motherboard

Before you remove the motherboard, you must remove:

• The left panel

• All boards installed on the motherboard
• All cables connecting the motherboard to other components (these include motherboard power cable, chassis
fan cable, storage device data cable, and service board cable)

Follow standard ESD precautions (see Electrostatic discharge on page 13) when handling components.
During servicing the motherboard, avoid using excessive force and always place the motherboard on a
grounded, non-metallic, static-free surface. Never allow any metal to touch the solder contacts on the
underside of the motherboard, especially beneath the battery socket. Improper handling can short-
circuit and permanently damage the motherboard.

Remove the motherboard components from the motherboard

1 Access and open the Fiery Color Server, as described on Accessing the Fiery Color Server on page 26.
2 Remove the printer interface board assembly from the motherboard (see Figure 6: on page 31).
3 Remove the following cables attached to the motherboard:

• Chassis fan cable

• Storage device cables

• Service board cable
For the location of each connector on the motherboard, see Motherboard parts and connectors on page 35.
Service Guide 37
Replacing parts

Remove the motherboard

Follow standard ESD and other safety precautions when handling the motherboard. Do not touch
the contacts and avoid using excessive force. Place the motherboard on a grounded, antistatic
surface.

Note: This procedure assumes that you have removed the printer interface board and cables from the
motherboard, as described in Remove the motherboard components from the motherboard on page 36.

1 Remove all the mounting screws securing the motherboard to the chassis (for screw locations, see
Motherboard parts and connectors on page 35).
To minimize tension on the motherboard, loosen all the screws partially before removing any one screw
completely.
2 Lift the edge of the motherboard opposite the connector panel to release the motherboard from the chassis,
and then gently slide the motherboard out of the chassis.

Note: Make sure to lift the edge of the motherboard near DIMM area, so that the underside of this area
clears the nearby screw standoff..
Make sure that the connectors on the motherboard clear the cutouts in the chassis as you remove the board.
Avoid handling contacts or using excessive force.

Figure 9: Removing the motherboard from the chassis

1 Lift edge of motherboard and remove from chassis.

2 Make sure that the motherboard connectors clear the cutouts in the chassis (cutouts not shown).

3 If you are replacing the motherboard with a new motherboard, remove the following from the old
motherboard:

• DIMMs (see DIMMs on page 32)

• CPU and cooling assemblies (see CPU and CPU cooling assembly on page 43)
Service Guide 38
Replacing parts

Replace the motherboard

Use the following procedure to install the motherboard in the Fiery Color Server chassis.

1 If you are installing a new motherboard, do the following:

• Install the DIMM(s) from the old motherboard onto the new motherboard (see DIMMs on page 32).
• Install the CPU from the old motherboard onto the new motherboard (see CPU and CPU cooling assembly
on page 43).

When installing these components, make sure that the motherboard is placed on an antistatic surface with some
padding.
Do not transfer the BIOS chip from the old motherboard onto the new motherboard. Doing so can cause the
system to shut down due to incompatibility issues.

2 Angle the motherboard so that the connectors on the motherboard fit into the cutouts in the connector panel of
the chassis, and gently slide the motherboard into the chassis (see Figure 9: on page 37).

Note: As you slide the motherboard into position, lift the connector edge to ensure that the underside of jumper
area PCIEX8 clears the nearby screw standoff.

Be sure to fit the motherboard Ethernet connectors under the metal grounding tabs in the cutouts.
Failure to position the grounding tabs correctly may result in permanent damage to the
motherboard and power supply.

Figure 10: Fitting the connectors under the metal grounding tab

1 Metal grounding tab

2 Motherboard connector

3 Align the mounting holes on the motherboard with the screw holes located in the base of the chassis (see
Motherboard parts and connectors on page 35 for the mounting hole locations).
Service Guide 39
Replacing parts

4 Insert the mounting screws that attach the motherboard to the chassis.
Partially tighten each screw before completely tightening any one screw. Do not overtighten the screws; doing so
could damage traces on the motherboard.

Always install the CPU and cooling assemblies before installing the motherboard mounting
screws. You may flex and damage the motherboard if you perform the installations in the wrong
order

Now you are ready to replace the remaining motherboard components to complete the motherboard installation.

Replace motherboard components

3 Reassemble the Fiery Color Server (see Restoring and verifying functionality after service on page 56).
Service Guide 40
Replacing parts

Verifying new motherboard installation, and transferring options and BIOS information

After you install a new motherboard and reassemble the system, do the following:

• Verify all functionality by using the motherboard replacement dongle to enter Service Mode. (Service Mode is
not indicated on the printer control panel, but is entered once you power on with a new motherboard installed
and the motherboard replacement dongle is installed on a USB port).
Service Mode is a temporary state that allows you to make sure that the motherboard solves the problem that
you are troubleshooting. Service Mode is exited automatically when you expend the motherboard replacement
dongle to transfer options to the new motherboard (see Entering Service Mode on page 40).

Note: Features of Fiery Impose-Compose are not available while in Service Mode
• If the new motherboard solves the problem that you are troubleshooting, use the motherboard replacement
dongle to transfer options to the new motherboard.
If you determine while in Service Mode that the problem you are troubleshooting was not fixed by installing a
new motherboard, do not expend the motherboard replacement dongle to transfer options to the new
motherboard (described below), do not install system software, and do not replace the hard disk drive. Reinstall
the old motherboard and return the new motherboard and the unused motherboard replacement dongle to
inventory. You may then perform additional service and troubleshooting procedures.
Transferring options (for example, Fiery Automation Package, Fiery Color Right Package, Premium Edition, if
applicable) expends the motherboard replacement dongle. For details, see Entering Service Mode on page 40.

Do not transfer options to the new motherboard prematurely. Do so only after you verify the new
motherboard in Service Mode. Remember that once options are transferred to the new motherboard
using the motherboard replacement dongle, the motherboard is customized and cannot be used in
another system.

Entering Service Mode

Use the following procedure to verify that the system functions properly after installing a new motherboard.

Enter Service Mode and verify the system

Note: This procedure assumes that the Fiery Color Server is powered off, you have installed a new motherboard,
and that you have reassembled the Fiery Color Server and attached external cables.

1 Make sure the Fiery Color Server is connected to the printer.

2 Locate the motherboard replacement dongle provided with the new motherboard and connect it to a USB
port.
3 Remove all USB devices that may be currently connected to any other USB port.
Reconnect other dongles and USB devices only after you verify that the Fiery Color Server starts up
successfully in Service Mode.
4 Power on the Fiery Color Server and allow it to boot without interruption.
At this point the Fiery Color Server is in Service Mode, so you can verify that the new motherboard solves
the problem that you are trying to troubleshoot.
5 If an error message is displayed indicating that the Fiery Color Server is locked, do the following:
Service Guide 41
Replacing parts

a Start a web browser.

b Enter the URL or IP address shown in the error message.
c Enter the passphrase which was used to enable the Fiery User Data Encryption and click Submit.

Note: Ask the site administrator for the passphrase used for the Fiery User Data Encryption. You have five
attempts to enter the passphrase. If you fail five times, you can select either of the following:

• Reset all user data: The Fiery Color Server will be reset to the factory default. The Fiery Color Server will
be reinstalled from the recovery partition. All the user data will be erased and the custom settings will be
reset to default. Selecting this option will automatically start the recovery process.
• Reboot Fiery: The Fiery Color Server will reboot and you are allowed to enter the passphrase another five
times. If you select this option, repeat from step 4 on page 40

6 Print the Fiery Color Server Test Page.

7 Ask the site administrator to connect the Fiery Color Server to the network and download a print job over
the network (see Configuration and Setup, which is part of the user documentation set).

If the problem that you are troubleshooting persists, or if you are unable to perform Step 4 on page 40 through
Step 7 on page 41 above while in Service Mode, you may conclude that the old motherboard was not the source
of the problem and does not need to be replaced. If so, do not transfer options to the new motherboard
(described on Transferring options and BIOS information to the new motherboard on page 41), do not install
system software, and do not replace the hard disk drive. Reinstall the old motherboard and return the new
motherboard with the unexpended motherboard replacement dongle to inventory. For more information about
troubleshooting system problems, see Troubleshooting on page 76.
If installing a new motherboard solved the problem that you are troubleshooting and you are able to print a Test
Page and send a print job over the network, you are ready to transfer options to the new motherboard. Service
Mode ends automatically when you transfer options to the new motherboard.

Transferring options and BIOS information to the new motherboard

After you verify that the new motherboard solves the problem that you are troubleshooting, you must use the
motherboard replacement dongle to transfer options to the new motherboard.

Transfer options and BIOS information to the new motherboard

Note: This procedure, which takes approximately 15-20 minutes, assumes that the Fiery Color Server is fully
assembled with the new motherboard, and verified in Service Mode (see Entering Service Mode on page 40).

1 Verify that power switch is turned off on the Fiery Color Server.
2 Insert the motherboard replacement dongle into a USB port on the connector panel.
3 Turn on the Fiery Color Server.
Wait until the Fiery Color Server reaches Idle.
4 On the printer control panel Select MB Replacement icon.
The printer control panel displays “Reading dongle...”, then displays the number of licenses left to apply to the
transfer.
Service Guide 42
Replacing parts

5 Select Yes to confirm the license transfer.

The printer control panel displays “Applying...” to indicate the transfer of options and the backup BIOS from
the hard disk drive to the BIOS chip on the replacement motherboard.

Note: If you select No, the process ends and you return to the Functions menu.
6 Reboot the Fiery Color Server.
7 Remove the motherboard replacement dongle after the Fiery Color Server reaches Idle.

Motherboard CPU and cooling assembly

Available space on the storage device is displayed in Command WorkStation.
If you replace the storage device, you must install the system software on the new storage device. Replacement
storage device are not shipped with preinstalled software.

Note: Do not replace the HDD and the motherboard at the same time. Doing so in the wrong order, without
updating the system, will cause the system to malfunction.
It is unlikely that both the HDD and the motherboard are defective. Avoid replacing both to solve one problem. If
troubleshooting strategies do not solve the problem, and you suspect either the HDD or the motherboard is at fault,
use the following order to troubleshoot- replace the storage device, install system software, and then check to see if
the problem persists. If it does, perform other procedures, such as replacing the motherboard (see Replace the
motherboard on page 38).
For information about installing system software, see Installing system software on page 59.

Proper handling

Improper handling can damage the storage device. Handle the storage device with extreme care.

• Use standard ESD precautions when grounding yourself and the Fiery Color Server.
• Keep magnets and magnetic-sensitive objects away from the storage device.
• Do not remove the screws on top of the storage device. Loosening these screws voids the warranty.
• Never drop, jar, bump, or put excessive pressure on the storage device.
• Handle the storage device by the sides and avoid touching the printed circuit boards.
• Allow the storage device to reach room temperature before installation.
Storage device problems may be caused by the following:

• Loose connections
• Faulty data or power cable
• Faulty storage device (bad sectors, read/write errors, or physical damage)
Make sure that you attach an ESD grounding wrist strap and follow standard ESD precautions before
handling Fiery Color Server components.

If you are replacing a storage device with a new one, you must have the following:

• The appropriate system software and documentation for the Fiery Color Server you are servicing.

Installing system software

This chapter provides information about how to install system software.
The Fiery Color Server is shipped with system software preinstalled in the storage device.
A re-installation of the system software will be required if:

• You have replaced the storage device.

• Restoring the system from backup images did not solve the problem you are troubleshooting.
• You are installing a more recent version.

System software installation reminders

Keep in mind the following when installing system software:

• Compatibility: The latest user software must be installed onto all computers that print to the Fiery Color Server.
Using incompatible versions of the system and user software may result in system problems.
• Backup/Restore Settings: All Setup configurations, as well as all custom files stored on the HDD, are deleted
when you install system software. Always save the current Fiery Color Server settings before you install system
software. After the installation is complete, restore the settings that you saved earlier.
The saved settings file contains the following: Setup configurations (except for Server Name and Date/Time), and
custom color profiles saved on the HDD.
• Configuration: When upgrading or reinstalling the system software, make sure to print the Configuration pages
before installing any software (for instructions, see Printing Fiery Color Server pages on page 16). The Setup
configurations are lost when you install system software.
• Static IP address: If the Fiery Color Server requires a static IP address (for example, in a non-DHCP network
environment), be aware that the previous IP address configuration is deleted when system software is reinstalled.
To reconfigure a static IP address (if applicable), work with the network administrator.
• Fonts: Installing system software deletes all fonts that the customer has installed on the Fiery Color Server. Only
resident fonts are restored during system software installation. Use Command WorkStation to reinstall
additional fonts.
To determine which additional fonts were downloaded to the Fiery Color Server, ask the site administrator to
print the Font List before you format the HDD and again after you complete the system software installation.
Any fonts not listed after installation must be reinstalled.
• Jobs: All jobs in all print queues and all jobs archived locally on the Fiery Color Server HDD are deleted when
you install system software. To save jobs, ask the site administrator to archive them to a location on the network,
so that the jobs can be imported back into the Fiery Color Server queue after system software installation. For
more information, see Fiery Command WorkStation Help.
Service Guide 60

• FreeForm masters: All FreeForm master jobs are deleted when you install system software. To save FreeForm
master jobs, ask the site administrator to archive them to a location on the network, so that the jobs can be
imported back into the Fiery Color Server queue after system software installation. For more information, see
Fiery Command WorkStation Help.
• Paper Catalog: Before you reinstall system software, make sure to back up the Paper Catalog database in
Command WorkStation and import it after system software installation.

Managing the Paper Catalog database

Before you reinstall system software, you must back up the existing Paper Catalog database by exporting it to a
remote location. You can choose to export all entries in the database or a subset. Exported databases are saved
as .xml files and can be imported back into Paper Catalog after system software installation.

Note: Only an administrator can access Paper Catalog Setup

If the administrator opens Paper Catalog in Command WorkStation for the first time, there might be a
long delay with Paper Catalog displaying all of the media entries that were loaded from the Fiery Color
Server and from the printer, or the media entries might not display at all. Inform the administrator to
close Command WorkStation, restart the Fiery Color Server, and then open Command WorkStation
and Paper Catalog again to access the media entries

Backup recommendations
Even though the server maintains a backup you can use for recovery of the factory installation, creating a separate
backup provides the ability to retrieve customized settings and job information if a recent backup is needed. You can
create a backup by using Backup and Restore (from Command WorkStation, or WebTools).

• To create a backup using Command WorkStation, or from a remote location using WebTools, see Backing up the
system configuration on page 64.
• To create a backup using Backup and Restore, see Using Backup and Restore on page 66.
Service Guide 64
Installing system software

Backing up an existing Fiery Color Server installation

• For an existing Fiery Color Server installation, first check if a backup image exists either on the server or an
external location.

• If a backup image exists, check if it is up to date. Compare the date stamp of the existing backup image to the
date of the last patch installation.
• If a backup image does not exist, create a new one after installing all available software updates.
• The backup image may be saved to or found in any of the following locations:
• Internal hard drive
• USB storage device
• If you do not have a backup restore the Fiery Color Server server to it's original state (see Restore the backup
image on page 68).

If you restore the system using the pre-installed recovery backup, the system and configuration will
be reset to the factory default. You will lose all service packs and patches installed to date. You will
have to install service packs and patches after restoring the Fiery Color Server. Use this option as
the last resort.

• If you have a system backup that includes your settings and jobs, you can restore the backup using Backup and
Restore (see Using Backup and Restore on page 66).

Backed up data can be only restored to the same Fiery Color Server.

• Use a descriptive and consistent naming convention when saving image files (such as date, product name,
product version, and short description).

After creating a backup image file, it is recommended that you transfer the image file to an external location, such as
a network location or an external drive.

If you select USB storage device as a destination, all the existing data in the USB drive will be lost.

14 Reconnect the cables to the Fiery Color Server.

• Connect the network cable between the Fiery Color Server and the customer network.
• Connect the crossover Ethernet cable between the Fiery Color Server and the printer.
Note: Be sure to use the correct cable for each connection.

15 Make sure that the Fiery Color Server power switch is in the ON (|) position.

16 Power on the printer using the main power switch.

Allow the Fiery Color Server to start up and reach Idle (00 should appear on the Fiery Color Server LED display).

Note: If you press the Fiery icon on the printer touch panel before the Fiery Color Server finishes the startup
process, TCP connect error appears on the printer touch panel. Press OK to return to the Home screen, and wait
until the Fiery Color Server reaches Idle.
Wait approximately 35 - 40 minutes longer for the Fiery Color Server to become Idle. The Start page will be
disabled by default and has to be enabled manually to print the Start page.

17 If you saved a configuration file earlier, restore the system configuration (see Restoring the system configuration
on page 65).

Note: If it was not possible to save a configuration file or if you installed an upgraded version of system software,
you must configure Setup using the Configuration pages you printed earlier. For information about performing
Setup, see Configuration and Setup, which is part of the user documentation set. Bypass any settings if it is more
appropriate for the site administrator to set them. After you exit Setup and allow the system to reboot, ask the
site administrator to restore the custom files that were archived earlier.

18 Install any required software patches:

• If you reinstalled the same version of system software, be sure to reinstall all software patches that were
previously installed on the Fiery Color Server. For a list of installed patches, see the Configuration pages that
you printed earlier.
• If you installed an upgraded version of system software (for example, version 1.0 to version 2.0), contact your
authorized service/support center for a list of valid software patches. Some or all of the patches listed on the
Configuration pages that you printed earlier may no longer be valid. Before installing a patch, be sure to
verify with your authorized service/support center that it is valid for your system version. Installing an invalid
patch may result in system corruption.

19 Reconnect any USB devices that you may have removed earlier.

Steps to do after installing or updating the system software

• (Optional) Set up the proxy configuration if you have a proxy server.

• In Configure, click Fiery Server > System Updates > System Updates > HTTP Proxy Settings, and enter the
proxy server information. Save your changes and reboot the Fiery Color Server.
• You can also enter the proxy server information in System Updates application if a monitor, mouse, and
keyboard are attached to the Fiery Color Server.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting
The Fiery Color Server is a server for printers, and is generally part of a configuration that has connectivity to the
printer and workstations or computers. Problems may occur in one of three areas:

• Inside the Fiery Color Server.

• In the interface between the Fiery Color Server and the printer.
• In the interface between the Fiery Color Server and the workstations or computers to which it is connected.
This chapter identifies the source of common problems that may occur with the Fiery Color Server and suggests
ways of correcting them. This chapter does not attempt to provide troubleshooting information for attached
computers such as Windows or Mac computers, printers, or extensive networks. Refer problems in these areas to the
appropriate service departments and network administrators.
If network administrators need to troubleshoot job errors that occur with Command WorkStation, refer to
Troubleshooting information on page 95 including how to use the Job Error Report feature to collect error
information to send to Fiery Technical Support.

When performing the service procedures described in this chapter, follow the Precautions on page 11.

Before you go to the customer site

Before you make a service call to a customer site, talk to the customer on the phone, and check the following items:

1 Does the printer work?

If the printer works, but the user cannot print the Fiery Color Server Test Page, a service call is probably required.

2 Is the failure caused by a simple operating problem?

• Is there a printing problem?

• Does the Fiery Color Server Test Page fail to print?
• Does the Fiery Color Server fail to respond to a print command?
• Does printing seem to take a long time?
• Is print quality poor?
• Does the Fiery Color Server fail to appear in the list of printers?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, refer the customer to Fiery Command WorkStation Help or
Configuration and Setup, which is part of the user documentation set.
If the customer has followed the suggested corrective actions and has failed to solve the problem, be prepared to
make a service call. Keep a log of the failures the customer has observed.
Service Guide 77
Troubleshooting

3 Has the customer made any network changes?

If network changes have occurred, request that the customer’s site administrator verify the Fiery Color Server
network requirements.

4 Is the user having printing problems with a particular image file?

If there are problems with files from particular applications, the user may be more successful using different print
settings.

If your telephone call fails to solve the problem, proceed to the next phase, the preliminary on-site checkout.

Preliminary on-site checkout

Most problems with the Fiery Color Server are caused by a loose board or cable connections. This section describes
the quick checks that you can do to locate and fix obvious problems. It describes how to eliminate any problems with
external connections to the back of the Fiery Color Server, and then addresses checking internal board and cable
connections. Check external and internal connections before replacing any components.

Note: Verify that the network is functioning, no unauthorized software or hardware is installed on the Fiery Color
Server, and no problems have occurred with a particular print job or application. The on-site administrator can help
you verify these issues.
For problems that persist after you check the external and internal connections, this section provides a
comprehensive list of internal and external checks that may help you fix the problem.
For more information about servicing and troubleshooting problems with the printer, see the documentation that
accompanies the printer.

Symptoms and solutions

For various problems and possible actions, see the following table. To learn possible causes and solutions for a
specific error condition, find the symptom in the charts and perform the appropriate suggested actions in the order
listed in the numbered steps. Verify functionality after each numbered step. Proceed to the next numbered step only
if the problem persists.
For example, in the following steps, perform step 1 and then verify functionality. If the problem is resolved, do not
perform step 2.

1 Check and reseat the printer interface cable.

2 Replace the printer interface cable.

with the same Ethernet hardware address.

• Conflicting network settings may be set in Setup and on the customer’s workstation.

• Inappropriate Setup options may cause printing problems.

• Missing or incorrectly placed printer description files may cause application-specific printing errors.

If the user can print the Configuration page from the printer control panel but cannot print a job from a computer on the
network, request that the site administrator do the following:

• Check all printer components of the network, including cables, connectors, terminators, network adapter boards, and
network drivers.

• Activate the network and use it to communicate with other printers.

• Confirm that the applicable network settings in Setup (such as AppleTalk zone, IP address, subnet mask, and gateway
address) match the settings used in the network.

Note: EPS file generation is not completely standardized among applications. Some users may encounter problems while
printing certain EPS files.

Checking the network

Printing problems may arise if the network hardware or software is not set up properly or does not match network
settings on the Fiery Color Server. Problems may also arise when printing from a specific application or printing a
particular file.
Most of these problems show up as printing problems and do not necessarily indicate Fiery Color Server
malfunction. The customer’s site administrator can eliminate many printing problems without requiring you to make
a service call. The site administrator deals with:

• Error conditions on the printer.

• Network connection problems that result in the printer not appearing in the list of printers on the customer’s
computers

Note: If the printer does not appear in the list of printers on the network, there may be another device on the
network with the same IP address.
• Conflicting network settings in Setup and on the customer’s computers.
• Printing problems caused by inappropriate Setup options.
• Application-specific printing errors caused by missing or incorrectly installed printer description files.

Troubleshooting

Printing to the Fiery Color Server

If the customer can print the Fiery Color Server Test Page but cannot print a job from a computer on the network,
you may have to make a service call. However, first make sure that the site administrator has done the following:

• Checked all components of the network, including cables, connectors, terminators, network adapter boards, and
network drivers.
• Activated the network and used it to communicate with other printers.
• Confirmed that the applicable network settings in Setup (such as AppleTalk zone, IP address, subnet mask, and
gateway address) match the settings used in the network.

When you make a service call, check the Fiery Color Server connector panel to make sure that the appropriate
network connection is in place. Print quality problems are difficult to trace. Before you try to troubleshoot print
quality problems, print a Test Page to make sure that the printer does not need servicing or adjusting. Also, make
sure that the correct paper is being used in the printer.

Note: EPS file generation is not completely standardized among applications. Some users may encounter problems
while printing certain EPS files.

Paper misfeeds occur frequently.

• Check the paper size settings.

• Use the recommended paper.

• Avoid using curled, folded, wrinkled, perforated, or glossy paper.

It takes too long to complete the print job.

• The data is so large or complex that it takes additional time to process.

• If the Data indicator is blinking, data is being processed.

• Wait until it is finished.

Troubleshooting information

You can create the following information:

• Job Error Report

• System Logs
For the successful problem diagnosis, we recommend that you collect the Job Error Report, System Logs, and the
Printer Device Logs at the same time.
When Command WorkStation is not able to connect to Fiery, Fiery shows up the recovery page. The recovery page
will have the new option to download the System Log.
For the procedure of collecting the Printer device logs, see the service manual of the printer.

Job Error Report

Job Error Report contains the important troubleshooting information that the technical support personnel can use
to solve customer issues. When a user encounters a job error, system fault, or any unexpected output while printing
a job, the user can generate a report from Command WorkStation. The Job Error Report is a collection of job files,
logs, and server information in a zip file, and it is available from both macOS and Windows versions of Command
WorkStation.
Service Guide 96
Troubleshooting

Note: The error log entries are overwritten after a period of time. To ensure the error logs contain the relevant
information, create the job error report as soon as possible after the error is observed. Create the job error report
before rebooting the Fiery Color Server and if possible, before any additional print jobs are processed or printed.

Create a Job Error Report

1 In Command WorkStation, select a job in the Printed or Held list.

Only one job error report can be created at a time. If multiple jobs are selected in Job Center, the Create Error
Report button is not available.

2 If accessing from a Windows client computer, press Ctrl and right-click the job. If accessing from a Mac computer,
press Command + Control and right-click the job.

3 In the shortcut menu, click Create Error Report.

4 Enter information about the job error.

1 Enter any comments and additional details in the text field. The followings are recommended:

• Date and time error occurred.

• Observed error codes, if any.
• Description of expected result.
• Description of incorrect result.
• Steps for how error occurred.
• Frequency of error (such as single event, rarely, sometimes, frequently, always).
• Whether the error has occurred with more than one file.
• Whether the file selected for the report is the same file that had the error.
• Operating system version, if the print job was sent from a client computer.
• Version of Fiery Color Server user software installed.
• Description of any other actions performed on the Fiery Color Server during the same time period.
2 Optional - To include the raster in the report, select Rasters.
The raster can be useful to include if the file is not processed correctly. However, it may exceed the allowed
size of the report. In this case, it may be useful to provide it separately.
3 Optional - To include color profiles in the report, select Color Profiles.
Color profiles can be useful to include if they are custom profiles and the print colors are incorrect.
4 Optional - To include the email log in the report, select Email log.
The email log can be useful to include if the file was submitted by email.
5 Optional - To include the native source file in the report, click Add +.
The native source file can be useful to include if the job does not process or print. However, it may exceed the
allowed size of the report. In this case, it may be useful to provide it separately.
Service Guide 97
Troubleshooting

5 Attach any additional related files to the report.

The job error report size can be up to 2 GB. If the selections and attachments result in a report larger than 2 GB,
the report must be reduced in order to be completed.

6 Optionally, if any print jobs are considered confidential, remove the job files before sending the zip file to
technical support.

7 Save the job error report.

Download the System Logs

The Fiery Color Server provides the ability to download system logs that can be sent to the technical support for
diagnostic purposes. The logs are combined into a single, encrypted zip file, which does not contain any original job
files.
1 Start a web browser and access the Fiery Color Server by entering the server name or IP address of the Fiery
Color Server.

Note: If a message about an untrusted connection appears or you are asked whether you want to proceed, you
can safely ignore the message and proceed to access WebTools.

2 In WebTools, click the Configure tab.

3 Log on with Administrator privileges and click OK.

To log on with the Administrator privileges, use the administrator’s password set by the site administrator.

4 On the left side, choose Fiery Server > System Logs > Download

5 Specify the location and save the system log file.
