When I was a little boy I can remember sitting over both of my

grandmothers house in East and West Trenton, being nosy listening to them
talk to their friends about how times have changed and how they have to
keep their faith in Jesus because he was coming back and when he did we (
Black people ) would be saved and taking to paradise. To me I guess that
meant being treated like white people.

My grandmothers would always have all of our family & friends over for
the holidays; which included all my uncles, My aunts and my cousins. Both
of my grandmothers Nana Miller or Nana Mingo would usually end up as
the babysitter for the evening because all the parents wanted to hang out
just as we like to do on holidays today.

At that time in the 70’ they would frequent the numerous bars up and down
Clinton Ave or the many other watering holes in the city of Trenton. I know
for sure you could always find a semi intoxicated individual in there telling
you how to navigate through life even though whatever they were drinking
in that bottle or glass was talking for them.

We were not bad kids but when we were acting up, it was just kid shit,You
know the jumping on beds, running around playing tag in the house until
we broke something. Nana would have a remedy for all the defiant behavior
though, It was called “SHUT UP OR GET YOUR ASS BEAT” it usually
ended up the latter. Now in this disciplining process she would drop Jewels
of knowledge on us with every stroke of that belt to justify the ass beating.

Now as child I didn’t know I would go through those experiences, or

actually see some of those “quotes” in real life. I just thought they was old
and crazy as most kids feel about grown ups when they are 7 or 8 yrs old.
When I started to grow into an adult I started to realize that everything I
went through and continue to go through in my life today, has been
experienced before and it is exactly what both of my grandmothers were
talking about. I guess those quotes and old wise tales had something to
them.

Most importantly and unknowingly I didn’t understand that they were

preparing me, my sisters and my cousins for the cruel uncaring world that
was waiting for us through those quotes and sayings. Now like every other
parent and grandparents; according to them they would have to tell you
something over 1000 times before we understood them. We weren’t that
hard headed, but the truth of the matter was that we were just reluctant to
listen to all that nonsense.

Not to anyone’s surprise that both of grandparents were spiritual and they
were always reciting verses from the Bible. How many grandparents, elders
or your parents would quote Genesis, Psalms, Luke, Timothy or one of the
many scriptures to justify your reward/penalty for any misdeed,mistake and
accomplishment you have made?
Mines did too.
To this day I still hear both of them in my head saying something that must
have been repeated a few 1000 times, sayings like:
“ don’t treat people any other way but the right way “
“ what you do to people will be done to you 10x worse or better “
“Never let someone go hungry as long as you have food “, etc.
Those quotes and many others have stuck with me and have became apart
of my character and how I govern my life.

I remembered how much I use to love to go to my local barber shop on

Stuyvesant Ave, which was just like any other barber shop in any urban
hood in America.
It was always like walking into an heated debate of some of the wisest and
dumbest men and woman in the ghetto. You had your so called “ minister
and his 1st lady” trying to preach, you had the many barbers and stylists all
of whom had their own testimony and philosophy on life.
You had your loud mouth hood rats trying to justify given their tax refund
to Raheem and why he messed it up AGAIN trying to flip it on some Weed,
you had your recently released brothers WHO somehow have gained some
sort of wisdom and a new found vocabulary being locked up for just 2
weeks. You can hear them trying to and unsuccessfully quoting the
teachings of 5% nation or they were now bible toting and trying to teach
you something.

There was always that one person who was always soft spoken speaking
philosophically about life and dropping quotes and jewels trying to sound
intelligent by using an extensive vocabulary. One day I caught the attention
of this certain OG as he was playing chess against another elder. He asked
me if I know how to play the game and at that time I didn’t so I said, “No”
.He said; “ sit down young man”; he then went on to explain to me the
history of and how this game of chess and life were alike. He said’ “ the
game of chess is like life because they both share some of the same
principles”. He continued to say, “One major similarity that they share, is
that you have to think before you make any moves”. I see where he is
coming from now what he meant before you make any decision you need to
think because “ for every action there is a reaction “.
I use to just listen to these OG’s in marvel because I couldn’t understand at
that time, if you were so smart what are you doing sitting here in the hood
unemployed playing chess in the barber shop everyday? You should be a
professor somewhere teaching.
