ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT IN SCHOOL
READING PROGRAM
I. INTRODUCTION
The Department of Education (DepEd) supports Every Child a Reader
Program, which aims to make every Filipino child a reader and a writer at his/her
grade level. Thus, the DepEd through the Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching
and Learning Division (BLD-TLD) continue to administer the Revised Philippine
Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessment to learners in public elementary
schools nationwide.
One of its objectives is to use the Phil-IRI data to serve as one of the bases
in planning, designing/redesigning the reading instruction of the teachers and the
school’s reading programs or activities to improve the overall school’s reading
performance.
Gavino Dawang Elementary School upholds the objectives of BLD-TLD to
attain the objectives of country's Education for All. Based on the reading passages
and findings of the Phil-IRI, it showed that some of the students had poor reading
comprehension skills and there are those reading levels were frustration. They are
the ones who need immediate remediation.
By conducting remedial instructions, reading exercises, and distributing
reading materials to those identified students, the students increased their reading
levels from frustration to instructional and independent levels.
The class advisers and the subject teachers served as the reading teachers
who conducted remedial reading to those identified students who had reading
difficulties based on the Phil Iri pretest results. The reading coordinator distributed
reading materials to the advisers and subject teachers to assess their level of
reading. In addition, the students brought the reading materials to be read at home
with their parents. In the
reading exercises, the comprehension questions were answered by the students
through the guide questions given by the teacher.
Our school has a Reading Teacher who conducted reading remedial sessions to
all grade levels. Through conducting remedial instructions, reading marathon and
distributing reading materials every grading period to those identified poor
readers, the students increased their reading levels from frustration to instructional
and independent levels.
