Free Damped Vibration
1. A machine weighs 70 kg is supported by three springs, each with a stiffness of 9.5
kN/m. Find the round natural undamped frequency. A dashpot is connected to
reduce vibration and it was found out that the amplitude decreases to 1/6 after 2
complete cycles. By assuming that the damping force is proportional to velocity,
find the resistant force per velocity of dashpot. Compare the round natural
frequency with and without damp.
[Ans: 20.18 rad/s, 398.92 Ns/m, 0.2 rad/s]
2. A shaft of torsional stiffness 5 Nm/rad is tied to its bottom end with an energy
wheel while to its top a body of constant mass. The moment of inertia of the nergy
wheel is 0.9 kg m2. A viscous damper is tied and it was found out that the
amplitude decreases to 1/100 after 2 cycles. Find:
a. damping ratio,
b. damping constant, C
c. periodic damped oscillation time, T
[Ans: 0.3441, 1.46 Nms/rad, 2.84 seconds]
3. The diagram shows a rod of uniform cross-section weighing 2 kg fixed at O. One
end of the rod is tied with a mass 5 kg and damper with its piston 0.5 kg. To
assure that the undamped round natural frequency, n = 7 rad/s, find the suitable
placement of a spring at the other end of the rod. The stiffness of the spring, K is 5
kN/m. If at that placement, it was found out that the amplitude after 3 complete
cycles is 1/5 of original amplitude, find
a. damping ratio,
b. distance x
c. damped natural frequency, d
d. damping constant, C
e. peak damping constant, Cc
[Ans: 0.085, 0.025 m, 6.97 rad/s, 7.34 Ns/m, 86.35 Ns/m]

4. The diagram shows a rod of uniform cross-section ABD with its center of gravity at
B. The rod mass is 2.5 kg and its radius of gyration at B is 0.05 m. At end D of rod,
it carries a mass 10 kg and spring 7 kN/m. At end A of rod, it carries a mass 5 kg
and damper C located 75 mm from B.
If the rod ABD is given small displacement and it was found out that the amplitude
after 3 complete cycles is ½ of original, find,
a. damping ratio,
b. damped natural frequency, d
c. damping constant, C
[Ans: 0.0367, 14.67 rad/s, 15.56 Ns/m]
5. A machine of mass 100 kg is supported on springs which deflect 20 mm under the
load. The vibration of the machine on the springs is constrained to be linear and
vertical, and a dashpot is fitted in order to reduce the amplitude to one-quarter of
its initial value in two complete oscillations. Find the magnitude of the damping
force required at unit speed and compare the frequency of the damped and the
free vibrations of the system.
[Ans: 486 Ns/m; 3.505 Hz; 3.525 Hz]
6. A mass of 2.4 kg hanging from the lower end of a vertical spring is pulled
downward through a definite distance and then released. If the resulting motion is
controlled by viscous damping such that the ratio of the first downward
displacement to the third is 4:1 and five vibrations are completed in 4 s, find the
stiffness of the spring and the damping coefficient.
[Ans: 148 N/m; 4.13 Ns/m]
