1. The diagram shows a bell system consists of a pendulum weighing 4 kg at C.
The spring K = 5 kN/m is located at end of rod ABC at A and the rod has a
moment of inertia of 0.04 kg m2 at B. At rod end A, there is also a mass 2 kg.
If rod ABC is displaced and released, find the natural frequency of the system.
Neglect the pendulum effect of the 2 kg mass.
(Ans: 6.27 Hz)
2. The diagram shows rod ABC with constant cross-section and weighs 1.2 kg. It
has a mass of 1 kg at C. Link DB is connected to ABC and weighs 1 kg. It
carries a mass 1 kg at D. The stiffness of the spring K = 1kN/m. Find the
natural speed and frequency of the system.
(Ans: 15.24 rad/s, 2.42 Hz)
All dimensions in mm
3. The diagram shows a see-saw with spring with its plank fixed at O. The mass
of each player is 50 kg and the plank 20 kg with radius of gyration 1 mm
about O. Each spring is fixed 0.5 m from O. If each player sits at end of plank
and the required periodic time is 4 s, find the stiffness constant of the spring to
be used.
If the number of player increases to 4 (each weighing 50 kg), find the
position of each couple so that the periodic time remains at 4 s. (The position of
each couple from O must be equal)
(Ans: K = 1.97 kN/m, x = 1.414 m)

4. A meter consists of a mass m as shown in diagram below. Find the natural
speed and frequency of the system if K 1 = 3 kN/m, K2 = 2.5 kN/m, m = 2
kg and the moment of inertia, I = 0.8 kg m2.
(Ans: 9.73 rad/s, 1.549 Hz)

150 mm
5. The diagram shows a torsional system. Find the natural speed and frequency of
the system if L = 100 mm, d = 20 mm, G = 100 GN/m2 and I = 80 kg m2.
(Ans: 90.3 rad/s, 14.4 Hz)
6. A steel shaft ABCD with length 1.5 m carries an energy wheel at A as shown in
diagram below. The mass of the energy wheel is 60 kg and radius of gyration
0.6 m. The shaft has a diameter of 50 mm for portion AB = 0.4 m, diameter 70
mm for portion BC = 0.5 m and diameter d mm for portion CD = 0.6 m. If
the modulus of rigidity of the shaft is 80 GN/m and the system natural
frequency is 10 Hz, find the diameter d.
(Ans: 95.0 mm)
