CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

In English language learning, students are introduced to various types of texts,

one of which is descriptive text. Descriptive text is used to describe a specific
person, place, animal, object, or event in a detailed and vivid manner. Through
descriptive text, students can improve their ability to express observations clearly,
strengthen their vocabulary, and enhance their writing skills in a meaningful way.

Descriptive texts help readers create a mental picture of the subject being
described. They are often used in both academic and real-life contexts, such as
writing articles, brochures, or personal descriptions. Therefore, mastering
descriptive text is not only essential for language proficiency but also useful for
practical communication.

In this paper, we aim to explore the concept and structure of descriptive text
more deeply. By understanding its components and language features, students
will be better prepared to write and analyze descriptive texts effectively.

1.2 Problem Statements

This paper discusses several main problems related to descriptive text:

1. What is the definition and purpose of descriptive text?

2. What is the structure that builds a descriptive text?

3. What are the language features that characterize descriptive text?

1.3 Objectives

This paper is written with the following objectives:

1. To explain the meaning and function of descriptive text in English.

3
2. To describe the structural elements of a descriptive text, such as
identification and description.

3. To identify and explain the typical language features, such as the use of
adjectives and the simple present tense, that are commonly found in
descriptive texts.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1 Definition and Purpose of Descriptive Text

Descriptive text is a kind of text that is used to describe a particular

person, place, animal, object, or thing in detail. The main goal is to give a clear
and vivid picture to the reader so that they can imagine the object being described.
In language learning, descriptive text is useful for improving students’ vocabulary,
grammar, and ability to express ideas clearly.

The purpose of descriptive text is to present information about something

by focusing on its characteristics, qualities, or appearance. It helps readers build a
mental image of the subject, even if they have never seen it before. Descriptive
texts are often used in real life for travel descriptions, product advertisements,
brochures, and biographies.

2.2 Structure of Descriptive Text

Descriptive text generally consists of two main parts:

1. Identification
This part introduces the subject of the text. It gives general information,
such as the name of the place, person, or object, and may also include its
location or importance.

2. Description
This section describes the features or qualities of the subject in detail. It
may include physical appearance, behavior, function, or other relevant
details.

For example, in the text about Blue Lagoon, the identification introduces the
location and name of the place. The description part explains the unique water
color, temperature, benefits, and surrounding environment.

2.3 Language Features of Descriptive Text

5
Descriptive text has several specific language features, which include:

1. Use of specific participants

The text focuses on one specific thing, like Blue Lagoon, Mount Bromo, or
my cat.

2. Use of adjectives
Adjectives are used to describe and add detail, such as hot, beautiful,
peaceful, or milky-blue.

3. Use of simple present tense

Because descriptive text talks about facts or general truths, it usually uses
the simple present tense (e.g., It is located..., The water contains
minerals...).

4. Use of linking verbs and relational verbs

Verbs like is, has, and looks are often used to describe and relate
characteristics.

These features make descriptive text easy to recognize and help students build
better descriptive writing skills in English.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

3.1 Conclusion

Based on the discussion in the previous chapters, it can be concluded that

descriptive text is a type of English text used to describe a person, place, object,
animal, or event in detail. It aims to help the reader visualize the subject through
clear and specific descriptions. Descriptive text is structured into two parts:
identification (introduction of the subject) and description (detailed explanation
of the subject's features).

In addition, descriptive text has distinctive language features, such as the

use of specific participants, adjectives, simple present tense, and linking verbs.
These elements work together to create vivid and informative descriptions.
Understanding descriptive text helps students improve their writing, vocabulary,
and ability to express ideas in English accurately.

3.2 Suggestion

To master descriptive text, students are encouraged to practice writing

descriptions of various subjects around them, such as family members, tourist
destinations, animals, or favorite objects. Teachers should also provide real and
relatable examples, like the description of Blue Lagoon, to help students
understand the structure and language features more easily. Lastly, consistent
practice and feedback are important so that students can develop their descriptive
writing skills with confidence.
