Executive Summary
This report presents an overview of my six-week internship at Meezan Bank Ltd, Raiwind Branch, conducted
from 1st July 2025 to 8th August 2025. The objective of this internship was to gain practical exposure to the
operations of a leading Islamic bank in Pakistan. My responsibilities included assisting in account opening
procedures, learning customer service handling, processing Pay Orders, Term Deposit Receipts (TDRs), and
RTGS transactions, as well as understanding cheque book issuance, dormant account activation, and
deceased case handling. In addition, I gained knowledge of Islamic banking concepts such as Ijara, Murabaha,
Musharakah, and Mudarabah. This experience enhanced my understanding of Shariah-compliant banking,
improved my interpersonal skills, and prepared me for future professional challenges.

Introduction to Meezan Bank Ltd

Meezan Bank Ltd is Pakistan’s first and largest Islamic bank, operating entirely under the principles of Shariah. It was
established in 1997 as Al-Meezan Investment Bank and later converted into a full-fledged Islamic commercial bank in
2002. Meezan Bank operates strictly under Shariah principles, offering a wide range of Shariah-compliant products and
services. Its mission is to establish 'Islamic banking as banking of first choice' by providing a complete range of Islamic
banking products and services. The bank’s offerings include deposit accounts, financing facilities, investment services,
trade finance, and treasury operations, all in compliance with Shariah principles, under the guidance of its Shariah
Supervisory Board.

Raiwind Branch Overview

The Raiwind Branch of Meezan Bank plays an important role in serving the financial needs of the local community,
including individuals, traders, and small businesses. The branch is structured with a Branch Manager leading operations,
supported by an Operation Manager and a team of officers handling customer service, cash management, and account
maintenance. The work culture at the branch is highly professional, focusing on customer satisfaction and Shariah
compliance. During my internship, I observed the smooth workflow and strong team coordination that ensured both
operational efficiency and customer trust.
Detailed Work Assignment

During my internship at Meezan Bank, I had the privilege of working in a professional and supportive
environment where I was able to learn various aspects of banking operations:

such as CNICs, proof of income, and references, and learned about different account types, including Current
Accounts, Savings Accounts, and Islamic products.
Customer Service: Assisted customers with general queries, guided clients on banking procedures and
requirements, and observed complaint handling and resolution.
Pay Orders: Learned the process of issuing pay orders, assisted in filling out applications, and processing
payment instructions.
Term Deposit Receipts (TDR): Observed documentation and issuance procedures, learned about profit rates,
maturity terms, and renewal processes.
RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement): Understood the requirements for large-value fund transfers, learned
documentation and approval processes for same-day settlements.
Cheque Book Issuance: Observed the approval process for cheque book requests and understood record
maintenance and security measures.
Dormant Account Activation: Learned procedures to reactivate inactive accounts and compliance
requirements for account reactivation.
Deceased Case Handling: Gained basic knowledge of how banks process accounts in case of a customer’s
death, including succession certificates and legal requirements
Remittance Services: Observing and assisting in processing inward and outward remittances, including foreign
transfers.
Cheque Clearing Operations: Gained knowledge of inward clearing, outward clearing, and intercity clearing
processes, including cheque verification, coordination with the clearing house, and resolution of discrepancies.

Islamic Banking Concepts Learned

 Ijara (Leasing) – A Shariah-compliant alternative to conventional leasing, where the bank buys an asset
and leases it to the client for a fixed rent.
 Murabaha (Cost-Plus Sale) – The bank purchases goods and sells them to the customer at a profit
margin agreed in advance.
 Musharakah (Partnership) – A joint investment agreement where profits are shared as per agreement
and losses are shared based on investment ratio.
 Mudarabah (Trust Financing) – A partnership where one party provides capital and the other provides
expertise; profits are shared as per agreed ratio.
 Salam – An advance payment contract where the buyer pays the full price in advance for goods to be
delivered at a future date, commonly used in agriculture financing.
 Musawamah – A type of sale where the seller and buyer negotiate the price without disclosing the
original cost of the goods.
 Shariah Compliance – Observing Islamic principles in all banking transactions, avoiding interest
(Riba), and promoting ethical investment.

the key skills I developed include:

communication.

Feedback
The environment at Meezan Bank, Raiwind Branch, was extremely welcoming and supportive. The Branch Manager and
Operations Manager played a vital role in guiding me through every task. They ensured I understood the “why” behind
each process rather than simply following instructions, which greatly improved my learning.
The Branch Manager played a crucial role in my learning journey, taking the time to explain the bank’s vision, Shariah-
compliant principles, and customer service philosophy. His leadership style created an environment where learning was
encouraged, and interns were given opportunities to engage in meaningful tasks rather than just observe.
The Operations Manager was particularly instrumental in helping me understand the technical and operational aspects of
banking. From account opening to cheque clearing, RTGS transfers, TDR issuance, and remittance processing, he
provided step-by-step guidance and ensured I understood both the process and the reasoning behind each step.
The branch environment was not only professional but also motivating. The emphasis on Islamic banking principles was
evident in every transaction, which deepened my appreciation for ethical banking practices.

I especially appreciated the cooperative nature of all staff members, who treated me with respect and patience despite my
intern status. Their willingness to share knowledge about Islamic banking principles and practical operations has
strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in this field.

Conclusion
This internship has been a turning point in my professional journey. The six weeks spent at Meezan Bank have provided
me with valuable insights into Islamic banking operations, Shariah-compliant products, and the significance of ethical
finance in today’s world.
By working closely with experienced banking professionals, I have not only learned technical skills but also developed
interpersonal qualities such as discipline, adaptability, and professionalism.
Overall, my time at Meezan Bank has reinforced my desire to work in the banking sector, particularly in institutions
committed to Islamic finance. I am sincerely grateful to the management and staff for their guidance and support, and I
believe the knowledge and experience gained during this internship will be instrumental in shaping my future career.
