Margaret Thatcher
(Prime Minister of England)
1979-1990
Margaret Hilda Robert is a former British Prime Minister.
Margaret was born on 13th October 1925, in Grantham,
Lincolnshire, England. She is the younger daughter of Alfred and
Beatrice Roberts.
Childhood
Margaret spent her childhood in Grantham City . Her father
has a store. Margaret with her older sister, Muriel grew up in a flat
above the store.
Her father was a greengrocer and respected town leader,
serving as lay-leader with their church, city-alderman and then as
Mayor.
When Margaret was five years old, she took piano lessons
and became a member of the church choir.
Education
When Margaret was primary school, she went to Huntingtower
Road Primary School. Then,she continued her education to Kesteven
and Grantham Girls School. She likes swim, travel, and hockey.
Margaret finished her education when The Second World War
was ongoing. Then, she got scholarship in Oxford University. She took
Somerville College, Oxford to learn chemistry in 1943.
In the university , she was active at political and served as
President of Oxford Conservative Association. After graduating,
Margaret moved to Colchester, where she was worked as a chemical
researcher in BX Plastics Company.
Life and Career
In February 1949, Margaret met Denis Thatcher, a rich
businessman from Dartford. In 1951, she was invited to stand as the
Conservative candidate in the safe Labour seat of Dartford but she lost.
Two moons after her defeat, Margaret married Denis Thatcher and they
had twin children, Mark Thatcher and Carol Thatcher.
Margaret was elected Prime Minister in May 1979 and served
for eleven and half years, longer than any other British Prime Minister.
In 1983, Britain’s economic growth was stronger and the term
‘Thatcherism’ came to refer to Margaret Thatcher. Under her rule,
Margaret introduced a new system to increase revenue but her new
system was opposed by local government.
In 1990, Margaret’s great supporter, Geoffrey Howe resigned
from his position as Deputy of Prime Minister . It caused the collapse of
Margaret Thatcher’s government in England.
Margaret Thatcher became House of Lords’s member in 1992.
She has been honored by the Queen as ‘Order of Merit’, one of a tribute
mark as a reward for an amazing work.
In 24th August 2008, Margaret suffered dementia. Dementia is
The loss of cognitive functioning-thinking, remembering, and reasoning
and behavioral abilities to such an extent. Margaret Thatcher died on
8 April 2013 at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke.
Margaret was one of the important figure of this century. Her
political philosophy came to be known as Thatcherism. Prior to her term,
she was already known as ”Iron Lady” because of her opposition to
comunnism.
