Dear Diary,
What a fine morning! As promised, Mrs. Martinez, our Araling
Panlipunan teacher showed us several pictures of the Hari Raya Festival
celebrations. She carefully posted on the board a colorful picture of the
Muslim mosque where the Iman or high priest awaits everyone for an hour
of prayer. One picture showed children playing batu seremban and capteh.
According to Mrs. Martinez, these were some of the games What’s In that
Muslim children play during the festival. Originally played by girls, batu
seremban is an easier version of sungka because it only needs five stones or
Capteh, on the other hand, is a game similar to the game sipa. Another picture that
was shown to us was the Muslims’ grand gathering in the town plaza which is
decorated with colorful streamers and buntings. As the discussion continued, I
also learned that during the festival, friends and relatives kiss one another’s hand
asking for forgiveness for past offenses. Children also kiss their elders’ hands as a
sign of respect. Then, in the evening, the family assembles for a special dinner
feast. These gestures mirror the Muslims’ humility and close family ties. Now, I
realize that although Filipinos have different religions, we have the same
admirable qualities and values that keep us strongly united.
