Eldred vs Ashcroft
• Supreme Court Case arguing the unconstitutionality of CTEA
• Argued, unsuccessfully, by Lawrence Lessig
• Argued that the further extension of copyright “distort[s] the
balance between private incentive and enrichment of the
public domain.”
On the bright side….
• Lessig and colleagues created a
nonprofit, Creative Commons
• In 2002, CC creates a set of free,
public licenses that allow
creators focused on flexibility
and sharing.
• Standardizing methods of
