Introduction of FOSS
 liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, study,
change, and improve its design through the availability
  of its source code.
 freedom to copy and re-use the software, rather than
to the price of the software
 Here is 1 slogan, FSF said whether it is right or wrong
"think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer".

                                                               3
History
 Free Software Foundation (FSF) was founded in
October 1985 by Richard Stallman in the U.S.
 Later on, freely modifiable source code in 1991 by Linus
  Torvalds
 with version 0.12 in February 1992, he relicensed
under the GNU General Public License
 In 1998 FOSS name was given.

                                                             4
What is free software?
free as a matter of liberty, not price
distributed in source form freely
 modified and redistributed
focuses on the philosophical
 freedoms

                                          5
What is open source?
marketing name for Free Software
the fact that the source code of Free
Software is open to and for the
world to take, to modify and to
 reuse

                                     6
Advantages
 Availability of source code and right to
  modify it
 Reuse of code and shorter development
  time
 Right to use the software in any way
 Lower development cost
                                             7
Disadvantages
 Disclosure of trade secrets
 No single entity on which the future of the
  software depends
 No “black boxes” are possible
 Fewer conflicting due to marketing pressure

                                                8
Why free software is
better than open source?
Software can get for zero
 price
Gives certain freedoms to the
 users
                                 9
Examples
 Linux (or GNU/Linux) freeBSD
 Open BSD
 Net BSD
 GNU/Hurd
