What is Slideshare ?
SlideShare is a website that offers business media such as documents,
pdfs and slide presentations. It is a community consisting of
professionals from various industries, where people can register and
upload their business content. Other individuals can come in and
comment on the media uploaded. The website has more than 25
million visitors monthly with the numbers growing quickly.
It began with a simple goal: To share knowledge online. Since then,
SlideShare has grown to become the world’s largest community for
sharing presentations and other professional content.
SlideShare was founded in October 2006 and acquired by LinkedIn in
May 2012. It allows users to easily upload and share presentations,
infographics, documents, videos, PDFs, and webinars. In Q4 of 2013,
the site averaged 60 million unique visitors a month and 215 million
page views. SlideShare is among the top 120 most-visited websites in
the world.
What it can be used for ?
• You can share the content that matters to you with your colleagues,
customers, friends and followers. SlideShares can be embedded
into websites and blogs, and are easily shareable on LinkedIn,
Twitter, Facebook, and other popular social media platforms.
They can be viewed publicly and privately. Connect with other
SlideShare users via comments, “likes,” and profile pages.
• Users can upload files privately or publicly in the following file
formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote or OpenDocument
presentations. Slide decks can then be viewed on the site itself,
on hand held devices or embedded on other sites. Launched on
October 4, 2006, the website is considered to be similar to
YouTube, but for slideshows.
• SlideShare also provides users the ability to rate, comment on, and
share the uploaded content
Slideshare Limitations
Unfortunately, some features are lost on upload:
• Animations and effects normally accessed and used in Powerpoint are
not supported in uploaded Slideshare presentations. This means that
animations and slides effects are lost and the presentations are shown
as static displays only.
• Music cannot generally be added to slide presentations in Slideshare
although some presentations i have viewed do have a musical
introduction. Music played as background to a pictorial presentation
though is not supported and any music files added to presentations
before upload are stripped on Sideshare. This is possibly done to
eliminate copyright infringements.
• Some people may feel that the 100MB file size limit is a limitation but
Slidehare offers advice on their FAQ page as to 'overcome' this issue
for users that need to.
• You have to buy a Slideshare Pro Account if you want to upload
privately, upload videos, or upload larger files.
