PROJECT DESCRIPTION
THIS STUDIO WILL STUDY AND EXPLORE THE VARIOUS PERCEPTUAL
SYSTEMS THAT WE, AS HUMANS,
USE IN RELATIONSHIP TO ARCHITECTURE - ITS SPACE AND MATERIAL,
ITS MEASURABLE AND IMMEASURABLE CHARACTERISTICS AND PHENOMENON.
THE CLIENT FOR THIS DWELL/LIVEWORK/EXHIBIT PROJECT WILL BE ONE
OF THE FOLLOWING: JAMES TURRELL,
ROBERT IRWIN, ANTHONY GORMLEY,
OR URSULA VON RYDINGSVARD. THE
WORK OF THESE ARTISTS AND HOW
THEY USE MATERIALS WILL BE A
POINT OF DEPARTURE FOR YOUR
EXPLORATION IN THIS PROJECT.
ARTIST STATEMENT
DESIGN STATEMENT
JAMES TURRELL HAS WORKED DIRECTLY WITH LIGHT AND SPACE
IN ORDER TO CREATE ART PIECES
THAT CAPTURES THE VIEWERS WITH
THE LIMITS AND WONDER OF HUMAN
PERCEPTION. TURRELLS WORK IS
NOT ABOUT LIGHT, OR A SEQUENCE
OF RECORDED LIGHTS, IT IS LIGHT
ITSELF. THE BODILY EXISTENCE OF
LIGHT MADE CLEAR THROUGH SENSES. MY WORK HAS NO OBJECT, NO
IMAGE AND NO FOCUS. WITH NO
OBJECT, NO IMAGE AND NO FOCUS,

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO ME IS TO
CREATE AN EXPERIENCE OF WORDLESS THOUGHT. - JAMES TURRELL
JAMES TURRELLS WORK CONSIST
ON A DIRECT USE OF LIGHT AND
SPACE TO CREATE SENSORRIAL EXPERIENCES FOR THE VIEWER. THIS
DESIGN APPROACHES THIS CONCEPT
BY APPLYING A SERIES OF OPENING PATTERNS IN STRATEGIC LOCATIONS OF THE BUILDING TO LET
NATURAL LIGHT IN. THE USE OF SOLID AND GLASS WALLS ALLOW THE
CREATION OF OPEN AND CLOSED
SPACES. THESE SPACES ARE ALSO
CONTROLLED BY THE UPWARD EXTENT OF CEILINGS WHICH ACTIVATE
A VARIETY OF SENSES IN THE USER.
ALSO, THE LOCATION OF THE BUILDING REGARDING THE SITE AND SOLAR
PATH ORIENTATION FACILITATE THE
CREATION OF EXPERIENTIAL VIEWS
AND CONNECTIONS TO NATURE.

SITING DECISIONS
THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE OLD
CENTRAL OF GEORGIA RAILWAY,
WHICH SERVES TODAY AS THE GEORGIA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM. THIS
IS A STUNNING NATIONAL HISTORIC
LANDMARK.
IN THE SITE YOU WILL FIND THE
ROUND HOUSE WHICH IS THE CENTRAL AREA OF THE MUSEUM. FURTHER TO THE WEST SIDE THERE IS
SECTION OF THE SITE DEDICATED TO
THE SAVANNAH CHILDREN MUSEUM,
AND NEXT TO IT A LARGE SPACE OF
BUILDING AND MACHINERY.
IN THE NORTH WEST CORNER OF
THE SITE YOULL FIND THE LOWEST
GEOGRAPHICAL POINT OF THIS LAND
WHICH IS CONNECT BY A SOMEWHAT
STEEP DOWN SLOPE COMING FROM
THE MAIN AREA OF THIS ZONE.
AFTER ANALYZING THE SITE AND
THE CONDITIONS OF THE TERRAIN
I FOUND THE SLOPE OF THE SITE
AS A PROMINENT PIECE OF LAND
TO BUILD THE DWELLING AND STUDIO SPACE. THIS LOCATION ALLOWED
THE DESIGN TO BE INTEGRATED TO
THE SITE AND HELPED THE BUILDING
TO HAVE AN AMAZING SET OF VIEWS
TOWARD THE NORTH WEST.
THIS DECISION WAS MADE CONSIDERING THE SOLAR PATH ORIENTATION
AND THE DISTANCE FROM PUBLIC
AREAS FROM THE MUSEUM, KEEP IT
AWAY AND PRIVATE FROM THE NOISE
AND TOURIST IN THE MUSEUM.

MOSTLY ANYONE WHO IS ABLE TO
AFFORD THE ENTRANCE TICKET TO
THE SITE IS WELCOMED. THE SITE IS
VERY WIDE AND IT IS OPEN TO THE
PUBLIC TO EXPLORE, ENJOY, AND
RELAX ON IT. THE SPACES ARE DIVIDED BY THE ROUND HOUSE, THE
CHILDREN MUSEUM, A SPACE FOR
MACHINERY AND TWO SMALLER AREAS BEHIND THE ROUND HOUSE,
BEING THE SPACE FOR MACHINERY
THE ONLY NONE PUBLIC SPACE.
THIS IS A MUSEUM THAT REQUIRES
AN ENTRANCE TICKET OF $10 TO
ACCESS THE SITE AND EXHIBITIONS.
CONSIDERING THAT THE DWELLING
SPACE FOR THE ARTIST WILL BE
BUILT IN THE SITE THIS WOULD BE
PART OF THE PRIVATE BOUNDARIES
OF THE AREA ALONG WITH THE MACHINERY SPACE IN THE SOUTH WEST
SIDE OF THE SITE.

IN THESE SEQUENCE OF SPACES I
ATTEMPT TO SHOW MOMENT AROUND
THE BUILDING IN WHICH YOU CAN
EXPERIENCE SENSORIAL MOMENTS
WITHIN THE VIEWS AROUND THE
BUILDING AND HOW THERE CAN BE
SO MUCH JUST AROUND THE CORNER OF A WALL OR THROUGH THE
CHANGE OF SPACES.
DEVELOPMENT OF PROJECT
THESE MODEL EXPLORES THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF SHADOWS THAT
CAN BE CREATED BY A SERIES OF
RODS. IT ALSO HELPS ANALYZE THE
CHANGE IN SPACE ACCORDING TO
THE EXTENT OF THE CEILING. PLUS
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT HOW IT EXPRESSES THE TRANSITION WITHIN
SPACES OF DIFFERENT HEIGHTS.
THIS SIMPLE MODEL ATTEMPTS TO
SHOW THE SURFACE OF THE IDEA
SUGGESTED FOR THE DESIGN OF THE
BUILDING. THE AMOUNT OF STRING
VARIES BY THE IMPORTANCE OF THE
SPACE, WHERE THERE IS THE MOST
STRINGS IS THE MOST PROMINENT
SPACES OF THE BUILDING.
THIS MODEL SHOWS THE FINALIZED
MASS OF THE BUILDING AND THE
OPEN SPACES THAT ARE GOING TO
ALLOW THE NATURAL LIGHT COME
THROUGH. IT ALSO SUGGEST SOME
MATERIALS LIKE GLASS AND WOOD
THAT ARE USED IN THE FINAL PRODUCT.
THIS IMAGES SHOWN ARE A NUMBER
OF SKETCHES AND DRAWINGS THAT
SHOW THE DESIGN PROCESS OF THE
BUILDING FROM A SIMPLE GESTURAL SKETCH TO A ARCHITECTURAL
FLOOR PLAN DEVELOPED IN ORDER
TO SHOW THE DIVISION OF SPACES,
STAIRS AND POINTS OF ACCESS.
FINAL PROJECT
THE DESIGN OF THIS HOUSE CONSISTS ON A VARIETY OF ANGLES
AND GEOMETRIC SHAPES THAT VARY
IN ALTITUDE AND ANGLES. IT HAS A
FEW OPENINGS AROUND THE BUILDING TO CREATE A PLAY WITH SHADOW AND EXPERIENTIAL FEELING IN
THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING.
THE MATERIALS USE FOR THIS DESIGN ARE CONCRETE, WOOD AND
CLEAR GLASS. IN THE INTERIORS OF
THE HOUSE INTERESTING PIECES OF
WORK WOULD BE FOUND IN RELATION TO JAMES TURRELL.

IN CONCLUSION THIS PROJECT HAS
BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE SINCE
IT HAS MADE ME IDENTIFY A CLIENT, A SITE AND A DESIGN CONCEPT
THAT TIES UP TOGETHER AS ONE.
BEING RESTRICTED TO THE ARTISTS
WORK IT MADE EVERY DECISION
MADE FOR THE DESIGN STRATEGIC
AND IT ALWAYS HAD A PURPOSE.
I ENJOYED THE RULES THE PROJECT SET AROUND ME AND HOW IT
MADE IT FEEL CLOSE TO A REAL
LIFE PROJECT.
