VERB PATTERNS

- VERB+THAT CLAUSE: Add, admit, announce, assure, claim, complain, concede,


conclude, confirm, emphasize, estimate, explain, mention, point out, predict, reassure,
remark, remind, repeat, say, state, stress, tell, warn.
E.G: Critics predicted that the film would be a success.

- VERB+ (THAT) + SOMEBODY+ (SHOULD) DO SOMETHING: Advise, agree, ask, demand,


insist, propose, recommend, request, suggest.
E.G: They demanded that she should resign.

- VERB+ INFINITIVE WITH TO: Agree, ask, claim, demand, offer, promise, refuse,
threaten.
E.G: He claimed to be an expert.

- VERB+ OBJECT + INFINITIVE WITH TO: Advise, ask, beg, convince, encourage, forbid,
instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, remind, tell, urge, warn.
E.G: He advised her not to be involved.

- VERB+ GERUND: Admit, deny, advise, recommend, regret, suggest.


E.G: He denied taking the money.

- VERB+ PREPOSITION+ GERUND: Advise, argue, protest, warn against, apoliguze,


blame, forgive, praise, thank for, discourage, dissuade from, accuse, speak of,
congratulate, insisto n, admit, confess, object to.
E.G: She admitted to feeling rather nervous.
