Utility Software
Utility software is software designed to help to analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a
computer. This means that utilities are used to carry out routine maintenance so that the
computer system can run at its best.
Although some utility programs are usually distributed with an operating system (OS),
users often install additional utilities. Those utilities may be used to carry out tasks that
are beyond the capabilities of the operating system.
System utilities
Anti-virus utilities scan for computer viruses and block or remove them.
Network utilities analyze the computer's network connectivity, configure network
settings, check data transfer or log events.
Diagnostic Utility compiles technical information about a computer’s hardware and certain
system software programs and then prepares a report showing the identified problems.
Storage device management utilities
Backup software makes copies of all information stored on a disk and restores either the
entire disk in an event of disk failure or restores selected files that are accidentally
deleted or corrupted.
Disk checkers scan an operating hard drive and check for logical or physical errors.
Disk compression utilities transparently compress/uncompress the contents of a disk,
increasing the capacity of the disk.
Disk defragmenters detect computer files whose contents are scattered across several
locations on the hard disk and collect the fragments into one place or contiguous area.
Disk formatters prepare a data storage device such as a hard disk, solid-state drive,
floppy disk or USB flash drive for initial use. These are often used to permanently erase
the whole device.
File management utilities
Data compression utilities are used to reduce the size of a file to save space or allow more
data to be stored on a media. This improves system performance.
Data conversion utilities transform data from a source file to some other format, such as
from a text file to a PDF document.
Data recovery utilities are used to recover good data from corrupted files.
Disk cleaners find junk files or files that are unnecessary to computer operation, or take
up a lot of amounts of space.
File managers are used to perform routine data management such as deleting, renaming,
moving, copying, merging, folders and files.
Miscellaneous utilities
Installation or setup utilities are used to initialize or make programs workable on a
computer system. There are also Uninstallers.
Screensavers causes the monitor’s screen to display a moving image or blank screen if no
keyboard or mouse activity occurs for a specified period of time.
Sort/Merge programs arrange files into a specified order.
