Ø if " is odd, #! = − √−#, e.g. (−8)" = − √8 = −2

Ø if " is even, the solution would be non-real for a negative number taking even root, we

Exponential functions and their graphs

Exponential function is defined as D(E) = # 1 , where the base # > 0 and # ≠ 1 is a fixed constant.

The properties of exponential functions include:

Ÿ The domain of exponential function is the set of real numbers.

Ÿ The range of exponential function is the set of positive real numbers

The laws of indices hold for exponential functions, such as D(E + F) = D(E)D(F), i.e. # 1#2 = # 1 # 2

Definition of Logarithm.
Logarithmic function if the “inverse” of exponential. If # and $ are positive numbers and $ ≠ 1 then the
logarithm of ; to the base T is the power to which $ must be raised to equal #. It is written as log / #.
In algebraic terms this means that

if F = log / # then # = $ 2

The formula F = log / # is said to be written in logarithmic form while # = $ 2 is said to be written in
exponential form where # > 0, $ > 0 and $ ≠ 1.
Remarks: log / $ = 1, log / 1 = 0, ln E = log 6 E and ln(Y . ) = Y 78 . = #

The properties of logarithms:

Let # > 0, $ > 0, ! > 0, # ≠ 1, ! ≠ 1, and E, F and Z are positive real numbers
