Form Layout in ServiceNow

Form Layout is one of the core tools in ServiceNow used to customize how a form looks by
adding, removing, or rearranging fields and sections. It provides a straightforward interface
primarily for quick configuration and layout changes to tailor forms to business needs.

What is Form Layout?

• It defines the basic structure of a form by defining which fields appear and in what
order.

• It controls what fields show up in different sections of a form.

• It is the classic, simpler editor compared to more visual tools like Form Designer or
Form Builder.

• Form Layout does not let you add tabs or complex visual structures but is great for
fast edits on a form’s field arrangement.

How to Access Form Layout

1. Open any record for the table you want to modify a form for (e.g., an Incident).

2. Right-click the form header or the form’s tab header.

3. Select Configure > Form Layout from the context menu.

4. The Form Layout edit screen opens, showing two columns:

• Available fields (those not on the form yet)

• Selected fields (those currently on the form)

What You Can Do in Form Layout

• Add fields from the list of available fields to the form.

• Remove fields by moving them back to the available list.

• Reorder fields by moving them up or down within the selected list.

• You can also rearrange the order of fields inside each form section.

• Create new sections or rename existing sections (depending on instance

configuration).

• Set field properties at a basic level (such as making a field visible or not).

Limitations of Form Layout

• No drag-and-drop visual design; it uses list-based field ordering.

• Cannot create or manage tabs (need Form Designer or Form Builder for that).
• Limited to field ordering and basic section management only.

• No advanced layout features like multi-column layouts, visual grouping, or embedded

logic.

When to Use Form Layout

• Quick edits to add or remove a few fields on a form.

• Simple reorder or clean-up of field display order.

• When you want to avoid more complex tools and just need a fast change.

• Useful for administrators who prefer simple configuration over visual design tools.
