RUTHERFORD'S Atomic Model

Rutherford and his colleagues Geiger and Marsden tested J.J. Thomson's atomic model by firing positively charged alpha particles at a thin gold foil. They discovered that although most particles passed through the foil as Thomson predicted, some were deflected at large angles. This led Rutherford to propose a new nuclear model of the atom, where the positive charge and mass are concentrated in a very small nucleus at the center, surrounded by orbiting electrons. The experiment provided evidence that atoms have an extremely tiny, dense nucleus instead of Thomson's plum pudding model.

MOTIVATION
RUTHERFORD’S
ATOMIC
MODEL
OBJECTIVE:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to;

Simulate and describe Rutherford’s model of the

atom.
 A group of scientists composed of Ernest Rutherford,
Johannes “Hans” Wilhelm Geiger and Ernest Marsden
tested Thomson’s model by bombarding a very thin sheet of
gold foil with positively-charged alpha particles.

Their experiment is referred to as the Alpha particle scattering

experiment.

After they performed this experiment, Rutherford proposed

another model of an atom which he called the Nuclear
model of the atom.
• Ernest Rutherford – he is the father of
nuclear chemistry and nuclear physics.
