His dedication to the physical nature of roles like Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron's American Psycho, and Trevor Reznick in The Machinist (2004), held him in good stead with director Christopher Nolan. Nolan then cast him as a damaged and darker Bruce Wayne in the box-office smash-hit Dark Knight Trilogy. Christian also voiced the character of Howl in the English language version of, Studio Ghibli's Oscar nominated animation, Howl's Moving Castle.
