Verbs can be followed by different patterns including infinitives, objects, prepositions, or nothing. Some common verb patterns are verbs followed by an infinitive like "agree to do"; verbs followed by an object and infinitive like "advise somebody to do"; verbs followed by an -ing form like "admit doing"; verbs followed by a preposition and -ing form like "insist on doing"; and verbs followed by an object, preposition, and -ing form like "accuse somebody of doing". Negatives are formed by adding "not" after infinitives and -ing forms.

Verb patterns
Verb patterns refer to what follows a verb.

Some verbs can stand alone. E.g. She laughed.

Others must be followed by something like an


object or preposition.

Let’s take a look at some of these patterns.
