Kendriya Vidyalya School R.B.N.M Salboni: Name-Niraj Kumar Class - Xii Science Sub - Computer Science

This document provides an overview of various network protocols including TCP/IP, IP, HTTP, FTP, VOIP, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP. It explains that a network protocol establishes communication rules between connected devices. TCP/IP is described as the main model of protocols used to interconnect devices on the internet, including transport protocols like TCP and UDP, and networking protocols like IP. Specific protocols like HTTP, FTP, VOIP and SMTP are then defined and their functions outlined. POP3 and IMAP are also summarized as email protocols that work with SMTP.

NETWORK PROTOCOL
WHAT IS NETWORK PROTOCOL ?

A Network protocol is an established set of rules that determines how

data is transmitted (SAFELY and SECURE) between different devices
in the same Network.
Essentially , it allows connected devices to communicate with each other
, regardless of any differences in their internal processes structure or
design.
TCP/IP ( TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL/ INTERNET
PROTOCOL)

TCP/IP is a suit of communication protocols (main model of

protocol) used to interconnect network device on the internet.
TCP/IP are the two main protocols, though others are included in the
suit.
LAYER PTOTOCOLS
NAMES
APPLICATION HTTP ,FTP, SMTP, VOIP

TRANSPORT TCP, UDP

NETWORKING IP
DATALINK (NETWORK ETHERNET , LAN OR WAN
ACCESS LAYER)
1. IP
2. HTTP
•+
3. FTP
4. VOIP
5. SMTP
6. POP3
7. IMAP
IP (INTERNET
PROTOCOL)
Each computer has unique address
over internet , is called IP
address.
IP is used for addressing through which data
reaches the final destination.

IP V4 : 32 Bits or 4 Bytes
“But due to over population or over use of
Network!!”
IP V6 : 128 Bits or 16 Bytes
HTTP ( HYPER TEXT TRANSFER PROTOCOL)
HTTP is used to transfer web pages and data files from one computer to another on
the World Wide Web (WWW). When you visit a web sites on web browser programs
like Firefox, Chrome etc ., While HTML defines the structure and layout of website
and URL defines how the resource e.g website must be addressed on the web.
“ Your computer becomes HTTP Client which receives web pages and data from web
server . This communication is governed by the HTTP Protocol.”
FTP (FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL)
The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network
protocol used for the transfer of computer files between
a client and server on a computer network
It uses the TCP/IP Protocol to enable data transfer.

MAIN OBJECTIVE :-
1. To promote sharing of files .
2. To encourage use of remote computers.
3. Providing one platform for any type of file transfer.
4. To transfer data reliably and efficiently.
.
VOIP ( VOICE OVER INTERNET
PROTOCOL)
VOIP which enables voice communication over the
internet through the compression of voice into data
packets that can be transmitted over the network and
then converting back into voice at other end
VOIP allows the transmission of voice along with
others data and provides an alternative to traditional
Network.
SMTP ( SIMPLE MAIL TRANSFER
PROTOCOL)
SMTP is a set of communication guidelines that allows
software transmit an electronic mail over the internet .
It is program used for sending messages to other computer
user based on E-mail address.
There are two main protocol uses with SMTP :-
1. POP3
2.IMAP
“ All these protocol works with the help of
TCP/IP.”
POP3 (POST OFFICE
PROTOCOL)
POP stands for Post Office Protocol.
It is a mail box which is actually a message access protocol through which a user can
fetch e-mail from the server .
POP works up on TCP/IP and helps the SMTP protocol from end to end communication.
MAIN DRAWBACK OF THIS PROTOCOL:-
“ E – MAIL cannot be accessed from another computer.”
IMAP ( INTERNET MAIL ACCESS
PROTOCOL )
It is mail box which is actual an improved version of POP3
Main advantage of IMAP:-
1. E-mails are on the server all the time, so accessing them can be done
from any place by having a device with internet access.
2. in case of computer crash or accidental deletion of data , since e-mails
are on the server , it is possible to get the e-mails back.
3.As the e-mails are stored on mail server , it utilize minimal local storage .
