SURVEY
ANALYSIS

As per the survey done on the psychological effect of mobile

phone the observation were quiet expected, As the majority
percentage (about 70 -80 %) are directly or indirectly affected
with their mobile phones. The majority of the affected percent
are the teenagers, who are affected in the wrong way which is
distraction. Which they try to overcome but fails. The major
reason behind it is social media. On the other side, the rest of
the percentage (about 20 -30%)are disagreeing with the effect
of mobile phones, as it could also be useful in many ways like
educational wise , help’s in communication , makes many
works easy etc. In summary, while mobile phones offer
numerous benefits, it's essential to balance their usage and be
aware of the potential drawbacks.

Interview
As our topic is based on psychology,
we took on the initiative of organizing
an interview with our school
counsellors Mr Stebin , Mrs Sasneem
and Mr Lijo ,We asked them a few
questions to bring forth a good
conclusion to our understanding of the
the psychological effects of mobile
phones.

10
INTERVIEW 1
This interview was given by Mr Stebin member of the School Council
Department

Siddharth :What do you think are the

major the psychological effects of
Mobile phones?
Mr Stebin : Yes, recently i came to know about a book
called ICD, International Classification of Diseases. In
that book, there is a specific area for psychological
disorders. Currently, the mobile phone addiction is not
part of that book. in The upcoming editions of that book,
I get to know that it is coming under disorders , it comes
under mental disorders, because mainly the mobile
phone is affecting both physical and psychological
factors.
Did you know the term, phantom vibration? If we
repeatedly use mobile phone frequently, after that we
may feel that, when we are not using the mobile phone,
we feel that there
a phone is ringing, the phone is vibrating or there is
some notification. It's kind of a hallucination.
11
So these are the very few symptoms that may show
directly that there is an addiction, but people don't
take it seriously. they will feel that it is a common
thing to happen But actually, it's a type of disorder or
addiction.
Okay, basically addiction means that any habits or
any substance causes repeated use of something that
we cannot survive without.
We only like to have a play with this mobile phone,
have to look, see, if you are studying for 30 minutes.
So, what will be the thing coming into mind ? Is there
any Instagram notification ? Any Facebook
notification or any friend will give us a message in
your WhatsApp account. That kind of thought is
there.
Because of that, we cannot concentrate on the text, or
anything like that.
I'm not saying it is a problem because it's a very good
object that we use to communicate, to get knowledge.
But it should be in minimal use. Otherwise, it will
become an addiction.
12
Gokul : Which age group is
positively affected by the
movements?

Mr Stebin : Some age groups use it positively to

their advantage.
And some age groups are negatively affected. we
can’t say that it's only affecting a specific age
group. It can affect any age group. So, we are
discussing this because the young generation is
majorly affected due to mobile phone use. The older
generation are not much inside this. They are only
using phones for getting information or having
messages or communicating to people.
So, the older age groups are positively affected by
the movements. They can communicate with their
children or siblings or their relatives. but if they use
it for more than an hour, after a particular level, it
will be an addiction for them also.
13
But on a major societal scale, the older age groups
are positively affected.
So, the studies say that the effect on the wave
mobile for addiction mainly affects the younger
generation.
Mainly because we are getting used to it.
Now, in our generation, from a mature age itself,
we are not able to control the use of mobile phones.
We have seen the development of mobile phones.
So, we are more used to it and it's like a part of our
life.
Like a computer, more than a computer.
It's a part of our life and we know that how to use
every feature in the phone, how to get information.

14
Munawar : what's your idea
on healthy Usage of mobile
phone?

Mr Stebin : Yes There should be specific time for

using.
Some people take three-four hour, some take more
But it should be between 30 mins and 1 hour On a
continuous basis. if it's more than that, that will start to
affect your mental health. If you are taking a break It
does not mean that you are using your mobile phone
for one hour and you are taking 10 minutes away.
So yeah 30 minutes to 1 hour is the correct amount of
time that should be given for mobile phone usage.

16
INTERVIEW 2
This interview was given by Mrs Sasneem member of the School Council Department

Siddharth : So, what do you think

are the major mental effects of
mobile phone?
Mrs Sasneem : Anything when you are addicted, it is
like it has its own negative effects. Every technology
gadget, everything has its own positive side, which we
are keeping aside, but when we look on to the mental
effects, prolonged usage will bring many medical
issues, eye pain, headaches, those are very evident.
Similar to the physical effect , it also affects your
mental health to a large extent in such a way that,
when you spent late nights sitting on the phone and
continuous exposure, it is affecting your eye, which
indirectly is affecting your brain. it is all connected,
isn't it? In fact, I would say all your sensory organs,
and what happens is you have frequent headaches, you
feel tired, you are not active for your daily routines,

17
this is internally affecting your productivity. So, once
productivity is affected, you are going to have other
external factors. External factors in the sense, as
students, what, for example, if we are talking in the
perspective of students, what are the other things that
are going to happen is, obviously your academics come
down, your grades go down. If you are really being
dragged away with the usage, your academy, the scores
come down, your parents get affected, your teachers
get affected, and you get affected. So indirectly,
everything is going to be a burden for you, how it is
affecting your mental health means, as I said, low
productivity, it affects your grades, it affects your
career selection Etc. because grades are important
Then your physical health. And it is something like, you
know, everyone is aware, you need to take care, but it
is like a toxicity just like how a person gets addicted to
drugs or, any other type of addiction It is very difficult
to hold yourself back. That is where it affects your
management I can conclude in that way.

18
Siddharth : Which age group is
positively affected and which one is
negatively affected by mobile phones?

Mrs Sasneem :Possibly, I would say every age group,

especially the middle aged and the elderly ones, as you
rightly mentioned, when it comes to, see, even when it
comes to academics for students, it has its own positive
sides. See, unlike you need not take your land phone
and spend too much time, you know, you put a
message, whenever your friend sees it, he can respond,
he can share the notes, you know. So it is there
permanently on your phone, until your storage space is
not filled. So there are many positive sides to it, and
even, so I cannot say any specific age group, like, who
is more benefited, every age group has, it is someone
positive side.

19
the intention matters, and how, fruitfully you are using it. If
you ask me about the negative impact, I think it is the elderly
say 55 plus, and the teenage group. I think they are being
dragged away with the usage. More influence is a negative
way, I would say, because Firstly, the thing, when I say about
elderly group,it is the time when normally people by 60 it is
a retirement age, So it is like, you, earlier days, in primitive
days, people end up more into social interaction with their old
friends
Through that interaction, and all happens now, but it is not
as like, how it used to be in earlier days. Mostly, I can see,
because when you go to India now itself, you can see all our
grannies, earlier days, when we use to chat with them,
nowadays, you can see, even, they are on Instagram, you
know, ask, calling down, they are also sitting, and so, I think,
because, they don't have any other option, they are done with
their work life, so it is a time where they are resting, so the
even days spent more time. So, I cannot say they are
negatively influenced, but there are things like, you know, it
affects them also.
not only health wise, there are many marital relations also,
relationships also matters, relationship issues also arise due to
this high usage.

20
Munawar : What is healthy mobile
consumption according to you?
Mrs Sasneem : We started using television long back,
isn’t it So for television, since it is a common system
which is kept in the house, monitoring was easy for
parents.as the mobile phone is a very compact device
which can be carried anywhere, it is very difficult for
parents to monitor. So, everyone, whichever gadgets or
whatever technology we use, everyone should be, we
made sensitized that, what is right and wrong, the good
things on the negative side of it. when it comes to
students, parents should have a monitoring system for
that and your question is exactly. So, healthy mobile
consumption in the sense, first of all, a person using their
app should have clarity. They should be trained in such a
manner, like, for example, if you talk in the student
perspective, students should be sensitized to identify
which is reliable data and not reliable sources and which
are not,

21
Once that awareness is there, I think they will have an
idea, you know, which platform to access, which
platform we shouldn't and what are the things that they
should be taking care of, the precautions, they should
be well-aware about that. One thing is that with the
limited usage, any gadgets, there should be a limited
usage. Yeah, and even screen time, if you talk about it,
when we talk about this healthy usage, using a phone in
the morning and night, even that matters. So, because
the more you strain your eyes during the night, as we
said, your sleep gets affected, which is a fact, You
yourself sit on a mobile phone just before your sleep, for
continuously, you're on your bed and you're with your
phone and a day when you sleep, one, you keep your
phone aside and you sleep after two hours or something.
So, healthy mobile consumption in the sense, first of all,
a person using their app should have clarity. They
should be trained in such a manner, like, for example, if
you talk in the student perspective, students should be
sensitized to identify which is reliable data and not
reliable sources and which are not,

22
Once that awareness is there, I think they will have an
idea, you know, which platform to access, which platform
we shouldn't and what are the things that they should be
taking care of, the precautions, they should be well-
aware about that. One thing is that with the limited
usage, any gadgets, there should be a limited usage.
Yeah, and even screen time, if you talk about it, when
we talk about this healthy usage, using a phone in the
morning and night, even that matters. So, because the
more you strain your eyes during the night, as we said,
your sleep gets affected, which is a fact, You yourself sit
on a mobile phone just before your sleep, for
continuously, you're on your bed and you're with your
phone and a day when you sleep, one, you keep your
phone aside and you sleep after two hours or something.

23
Munawar : Apps like Instagram, Tik
Tok create fake reality which worsens
the mental health of people, do you
agree?

Mrs Sasneem : So people, whatever they see on the

screen as you said on the reels or whatever it is, they
feel that is a reality. Like they will be going through a
crucial face of their life. Like just this morning we
were having a discussion. It could be pregnancy,
delivery or even a person being hospitalized. You find
a person standing with the phone so that he captures
the important things that are happening over there.
And you know, even a sad moment is transferred into
the virtual world.

24
It becomes like it is being circulated and we don't
have any privacy, it's a world where we don't have
any more privacy. we cannot have control over that.
But the person, as a viewer, should know what is right,
what is wrong. That is the first and foremost thing
everyone should make up before a parent or anyone
hands over a phone to his child. I think that is a prime
thing which a child has to be trained in. They should
know what is right and what is wrong and it is fake
and it is a real one.

26
INTERVIEW 3
This interview was given by Mr lijo HOD of Social Studies Department

Gokul : What do you think are the

major psychological effects of mobile
phones?
Mr Lijo : So, see mobile phones have become an
integral part of our lives, and while they offer
numerous benefits, they can also have some
psychological effects. Some major psychological
effects like Addiction The Excessive use of mobile
phones can lead to addiction, I think it's called
"nomophobia." People may feel stressed when
separated from their phones, leading to a constant
need for checking messages or notifications. Sleep
Disruption: Frequent use of phones before bedtime
can disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to insomnia.

27
Social Isolation: Paradoxically, excessive mobile
phone use can lead to social isolation. Spending
excessive phone time may reduce face-to-face
interactions, weaken real-life connections, and
contribute to feelings of loneliness and isolation. And
more like it affects academic performance or other
health issues.
It's important to note that the psychological effects
can vary from person to person and not everyone may
experience these issues. Moderation, setting
boundaries, and practicing healthy phone habits can
help mitigate these effects and promote a balanced
relationship with mobile phones.

28
Munawar : Which age group is
positively affected by the
movements?

Mr Lijo : Personally, I feel like there is no perfect age

group that is only positively affected by mobile phone
Some age groups use it positively to their advantage.
And some age groups are negatively affected.
Children who fall under the age group of 9-13 mostly
use it positively and they can be controlled by their
parents when it is needed but when they grow old it is
in the hands of the user to use them positively or
negatively and The older generation is not used to
these technologies, they are not well aware of the
features of mobile phones. That's why they are not
using that much.

29
Gokul : What's your idea on
healthy consumption in public?

Mr Lijo : Yeah, i think we should try to limit our

usage of mobile phones to 30 to 90 min, But we can’t
avoid using phones if it is really necessary Some
people take three to four hours if it is related to work,
some take more, So we have to limit it between 30 min
to 1 hour on a continuous basis. It depends on the work
we are using the mobile phones for, Only the user can
control and limit his screen time, There are a lot of
apps and features in your mobile phones that can help
you achieve it, For example the focus mode in our
phones.

30
Munawar : What are the roles of
parents and their child's Mental
health using mobiles?

Mr Lijo : The main thing is they are not aware of

these psychological effects, And won’t be able to
control their child because, not all of the parents are
very updated or mostly because they are also making
the same mistakes, they don’t realize how spending a
lot of time with their mobile phones affects them, they
are doing that because they are not aware of the pros
and cons of mobile phone. And kids of this generation
are very up to date with the new features of mobile
phone
For example, when parents give phones to their
children for their school work or any other academic
work we can’t be sure if he/she is only using them for
studies

INTERVIEW ANALYSIS

We were given enough data and information to

consider from Our respected counsellors
Mr.Stebin ,Mrs Sasneem and Mr.Lijo.
psychological effects of Mobile phone is a very
serious issue plaguing our mind. It has been seen
that people of age group 16- 20 that is the
younger generation is mostly being affected by
this and parents not being able to monitor their
children is also a causes. The good news is that we
can change it, But for that we must limit ourself of
using mobile phones. and understand that we
should know what is good for us and what is not
needed for us.
33
Podcast
The group members decided to do a podcast on the
same topic psychological effects of mobile phones to
combine our thoughts and current knowledge about
the topic.
Introduction
Siddharth: Hello everyone today in this podcast we are diving
into the psychological effects of mobile phones. We will
explore how these devices impact our mental well-being. I'm
Siddharth.

Gokul: And I’m Gokul and joining us today we have

Munawar.

Munawar: Hi everyone I'm Excited to be here and discuss this

relevant topic.

Siddharth: To Start off, let’s explore the positive

psychological effects of mobile phones. Munawar,
Could you share some insights?

Munawar: Absolutely. Mobile phones have numerous

positive impacts on our psychological well-being. Here are a
few key points:

34
1.Enhanced Connectivity: Mobile phones allow us to
stay connected with our loved ones, no matter the
distance. They facilitate instant communication and
bridge gaps, reducing feelings of loneliness and
isolation. Social media platforms enable us to
maintain and strengthen relationships, share
experiences, and provide emotional support.
Access to Information and Education: Mobile phones
provide us with easy access to a vast amount of
information. They serve as portable libraries, allowing
us to learn and explore various topics. Educational
apps and online courses empower individuals to
expand their knowledge and acquire new skills
conveniently.

Gokul: Those are some great points highlighting the

positive aspects. Now, let’s discuss the potential
adverse psychological effects of mobile phones.
Munawar, could you shed some light on this?

The Cons of Mobile Phones

Munawar: Certainly. While mobile phones bring
many benefits, it’s essential to be aware of their
potential negative impacts. Here are a few aspects to
consider:

35
Digital Addiction:Excessive use of mobile phones
can lead to addiction and dependency, impacting
mental health and overall well-being.Constantly
checking notifications, and social media updates
and excessive screen time can disrupt daily
routines, relationships, and productivity.
2. Sleep disturbances: The blue light emitted by
mobile phones can interfere with our sleep patterns,
suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone
responsible for regulating sleep. Scrolling through
our phones before bedtime can disrupt our sleep
quality, leading to insomnia and sleep disturbances.
Siddharth: Thank You for sharing those insights,
Munawar. Now let’s move on to discussing
strategies for maintaining a healthy relationship
with Mobile phones:
Gokul: Absolutely. It’s crucial to establish healthy
habits and boundaries regarding mobile phone
usage. What are some strategies individuals can
employ?
Munawar: Here are free strategies for healthy
mobile phone use:
Set device free time:
Designate specific periods of the day when you
disconnect from your mobile phone, such as during
meals, social gatherings, or before bedtime. Engage
in activities that promote well-being, such as
reading, exercising, or spending quality time with
loved ones.
36
Practise Mindful Usage :
Be mindful of your mobile phone usage and its
impact on your mental well-being. Consider setting
limits on social media apps or using productivity
apps that track and manage screen time to avoid
excessive use.
Siddharth: Those are excellent strategies. It’s
important for our listeners to implement them in
their daily lives. As we wrap up, any final thoughts,
Munawar?
Munawar: I would like to emphasise the
importance of finding a balance in our relationship
with mobile phones. They offer incredible benefits,
but it's crucial to be aware of their potential
negative impacts. By implementing healthy habits
and boundaries, we can cultivate a healthier and
more mindful use of technology.
Gokul: Thank you so much, Munawar, for sharing
your thoughts on the psychological effects of mobile
phones. It has been an enlightening discussion.
Siddharth: And thank you to all our listeners for
tuning in, Bye
Munawar: Thank you. It was a pleasure to be part
of this conversation. Goodbye, everyone.

REPORT
Our group started this project due to the lack of awareness
of the psychological problems which could be arised due to
mobile phones. We stated with collecting information such
as surveys and interviews in the survey it was quite evident
that a large percent of people are spending more time in
mobile phones than they intend to which shows its addictive
nature it was also revealed that the age group most affected
is in between 16-20. The survey says that mobile usage
interferes heavily with productivity in work and school
which is not the sign of an healthy society. 50% of the
survey participants came to the agreement that mobile
phones mentally affects them in a negative manner thus we
can clearly see the importance of the topic

39
Mobile phones become more deeply integrated into our routines, it is
crucial to examine their psychological effects on individuals and
society as a whole. A survey was conducted with people of different
age groups to analyse the general public's idea in our topic of
concern, when asked how mobile phones affect mental health, 55.4%
said it negatively affects them while in contrast 44.6% argued it
positively affected their mental health. The positives of using
technology are Enhanced Connectivity: One of the most evident
positive impacts of mobile phones is their ability to connect people
around the globe which improves our mental health . People can stay
in touch with friends, family, and colleagues regardless of physical
distance. The sense of connection and social support fostered by
mobile communication can mitigate feelings of isolation, loneliness,
and enhance overall well-being.

40
Convenience and Efficiency: Mobile phones have
streamlined various aspects of daily life, from managing
schedules to access information. The convenience and
efficiency offered by mobile apps and digital tools can
contribute to reduced stress levels and improved time
management, positively influencing mental health. Learning
and Skill Development: Mobile phones serve as powerful
educational tools, providing easy access to a wealth of
information and learning resources. Learning apps, language
courses, and educational games can stimulate cognitive
growth, boost self-esteem, and promote a sense of
accomplishment. Entertainment and Stress Relief: Mobile
phones offer a plethora of entertainment options, ranging
from gaming and streaming to reading and creative
expression. Engaging in enjoyable activities through mobile
devices can serve as a healthy form of stress relief and
relaxation. Mindfulness and Mental Health Apps: mental
well-being. Mindfulness and meditation apps can assist users
in managing stress, anxiety, and depression. These apps
provide users with tools to enhance their emotional resilience
and self-awareness.
41
The Negative Psychological Effects are Digital Addiction:
The rapid evolution of mobile technology has given rise to
digital addiction, wherein individuals compulsively check
their phones and engage with digital content. This
addiction can lead to decreased attention spans, disrupted
sleep patterns, and a heightened risk of anxiety and
depression. According to the survey 11% had decreased
motivation due to digital addiction.

Social Isolation: Paradoxically, while mobile phones enable

virtual connectivity, they can also contribute to social
isolation in the physical world. Excessive screen time may
lead to reduced face-to-face interactions, diminishing
interpersonal skills and creating feelings of detachment.
According to the survey 69% had issues in relationships
due to mobile usage. Cyberbullying and Online
Harassment: The digital realm is not devoid of negative
interactions. Cyberbullying and online harassment through
mobile devices can have severe psychological
consequences, causing emotional distress, low self-esteem,
and even depression among victims.
42
his might eventually affect their academics and family
relationships. Comparison and Self-Esteem: The
pervasive use of social media platforms on mobile
phones can fuel the tendency to compare oneself with
others. Constant exposure to carefully curated images
and lifestyles can lead to feelings of inadequacy, poor
self-esteem, and a distorted self-perception. Impaired
Concentration and Productivity: The frequent
interruptions caused by notifications and applications
cause phantom vibration syndrome as mentioned in the
interview by Mr Stebin. According to the survey 11%
always had decreased concentration and productivity
While mobile phones enable virtual connectivity, they
can paradoxically hinder face-to-face interactions.
The sight of people immersed in their phones in social
settings has become all too common, leading to phone
snubbing, which can erode the quality of in-person
interactions. Over time, reduced social interactions and
increased reliance on digital communication might lead
to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

43
Mobile phones are individual devices which are
private rather than television so individuals need to
get the maturity to use them if below 15 years of age
parental guidance is absolutely necessary, 16+ still
needs some supervision as they are still adolescents
and may be guided in the wrong way. Interview results
were mixed. Mr.Stebin said that psychological effects
are independent of age and completely depend on
usage whereas Mrs Sasneem’s point was that the
younger population was majorly affected negatively
whereas the old age population was positively
affected. Mobile phones are highly beneficial to all of
us but only in controlled usage, having breaks in
between usage thus avoiding continuous screen time.
Social media and games usage should be in control
and differentiation of real and reel is absolutely
necessary. Use screen time to track usage thus
keeping it in control. Afterall the most important
thing is self-control.

44
By Siddharth
Personally I feel the topic is of great importance,
I feel very lucky to get Gokul and Munawar as
my teammates, Both of them were really helpful
and supportive. While working on this project I
got myself into a lot of self realization that how I
was mentally affected by Mobile phones once.
The survey was done by people of a variety of
age groups to get a panoramic view of the topic.
I would really like to thank Mrs. Sasneem, Mr.
Stebin and Mr. Lijo for their amazing interviews
and our English teacher Mrs. Sonia for
supporting us.

45
I really had to delve deeper into this topic for
doing the report but with the help of my
teammates it was successfully done. I realised the
efforts being put into important topics like this is
crucial and I once again like to say that my
teammates where the most supportive and
coordinated very well with me

The reason our group came up with this topic is

because the general public doesn't give enough
attention to the mental effects of mobile phones
but only focuses on physical strain and waste of
time, so we bring this topic into the attention.

46
By Gokul
Working on the project was a daunting
experience My group leader entrusted me with
the responsibility of making the survey,
gathering responses, making a script for the
presentation, and documenting the interview we
had.

The Topic chosen was Psychological Effect of

Mobile phones. First, when the topic was
decided I didn’t have a good idea about the topic
But my team members Siddharth and Munawar
helped me a lot with gathering information. We
together came across a lot of information and it
got me curious and interested in the Topic.
47
Making a survey was the first task I was assigned
and within a few weeks we got a lot of responses.
We got almost 55 responses within a month and
next I had to make a script for a podcast.

At first, I didn’t have a clear idea of making a

podcast script but with the help of my group
members and a fair amount of research on the
topic, I made a decent script.

The interview part of the project was fairly easy

and smooth and typing out the interview wasn’t
that hard.
It was surely a bumpy ride. Yet me and my
teammates made the most out of this opportunity
given to us.
i have gained a lot of knowledge and skills from

We were very lucky to be under the wing of

Sonia Ma'am, our English teacher who provided
us with suggestions whenever necessary. Looking
back it was a wonderful experience for me.

This topic has been chosen for the project as the
Psychological Effect of Mobile phones. When the
topic was decided I didn’t have a good idea of the
topic. But as we moved on and started working on
the project, I came across a lot of information
regarding the project. I had curiosity to explore
more about the topic and get deep knowledgeq.

My team leader Siddarth and Gokul were very

helpful and supportive. They helped me to gather
information and made me confident for the tasks.
I did my best from my side for the project.
