Terminology:

Emergency Room Visits:

Clients who are seen in the Emergency Room without appointments. This is
(supposed to be) reserved for patients in acute distress, such as chest pain, stroke or
breathing difficulties. Some clients may be subsequently admitted to the hospital to the
appropriate patient care unit.

In Patients:

Clients who are admitted into the hospital overnight. The “Admit Date” represents the
day the client was admitted to the hospital or other facility (ie: long term care facility)

Out Patients:

Clients who are NOT admitted to hospital overnight, including day surgery patients.
They may be admitted to a Medical Day Unit or Surgical Day Unit. These are sometimes
referred to as “elective” or “planned” admissions, as the client often knows in advance
that he or she is coming to the hospital for medical/surgical purposes.
