Computers in a Changing World
Many scientific and technological advances mark the beginning
of the twentieth century. These advances include inventions such
as airplane, television, and most especially the computer.
Computers are changing our lives, they are sweeping away the old
ways of doing things with their superb speed and reliability.
Computers in a Changing World
As many of today’s basic functions are
being simplified by technology, computers
have been on the forefront in developing
innovations through its many functions.

Computers
is an electronic machine that processes and
stores information.
Computer System
A computer system is a complete set of
hardware, software, peopleware, and data
that work together to process information
and perform tasks. .
Elements of a Computer System
1. Hardware- refers to the physical,
tangible computer equipment and
devices which provides support for
major functions such as input, process,
output and storage.
A.1. Keyboard
A computer keyboard is an input device
used to enter characters and functions
into the computer system by pressing
buttons, or keys. It is the primary device
used to enter text.
A.2. Mouse
The mouse is another input device
used to point and select objects on
the computer monitor.
A.3. Scanner
A scanner is use to capture a source
document and converts printed data or
images into an electronic data format
that a computer can store or process as
required.
A.3. Microphone
A microphone is an input device to
input sound that is then stored in a
digital form
B.1. Monitor
A monitor is an electronic visual
computer display that includes a
screen, circuitry, and the case in
which that circuitry is enclosed.
B.2. Printer
The printer is a device use to print
texts and pictures.
B.3. Speaker
A computer speaker is an output
hardware device that produces
sound.
B.4. Projector
A projector is an output device that
projects an image onto a large
surface, such as a white screen or
wall.
C. PROCESSING DEVICE
is the computer’s circuitry in the system
unit. It plays an important role in
processing operations. It is used to
process data, using instructions from the
program.
C.1. Motherboard /
Mainboard / System Board –
is the main circuit board of a
computer. It contains all the
circuits and components that
run the computer.
C.2. CPU (Central
Processing Unit)
- The processor is the
main “brain” or “heart” of
a computer system.
C.3. RAM – (Random Access
Memory)
RAM is volatile, meaning
it holds data only when
the power is on. When the
power is off, RAM’s
contents are lost.
C.4. Video Card/GPU (Graphics
Processing Unit) - also called a
display card, graphics card,
display adapter, or graphics
adapter is an expansion card
which generates a feed of output
images to a display device (such
as a computer monitor).
Storage devices–
are hardware devices used for storing
information from the computer.
Flash drive
is a small rectangular device that
is designed to be plugged directly
into a USB port on a computer
and is often used for transferring
files from one computer to
another.
Hard drive
is an internal hard drive is the
main storage device in a
computer. An external hard drive
is also known as removable hard
drive. It is used to store portable
data and backups.
Optical disc
is a storage device that uses
laser technology to read and
write data.
Computer SOFTWARE
Computer software is a collection of
instructions that tells the computer
hardware how to work.
Types of computer software:
a) System software - refers to the files and
programs that make up your computer's
operating system.
Examples: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows
10, Linux, macOS, anti virus software and etc.
Types of computer software:
b) Application software–refer to programs
designed for the computer users. These program
helps the end user to perform specific task.
Examples: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint,
Google Chrome, Canva, Adobe Photshop, Paint,
Roblox
PEOPLEWARE
These are the people who use, operate, and
manage the computer system. Without
people, the computer cannot function.
Examples: programmers, students, teachers,
and other professional who uses computer
